Louis Hutton thinks the Development Squad’s point against Sheffield Wednesday showed the character that is in the squad after a difficult start to the season.
The Bees dominated the game against The Owls but fell behind midway through the second-half as Matt Penney found the top corner with a fantastic 30-yard volley.
Jon De Souza’s side responded straight away and levelled three minutes later as Betinho converted from close range after good work from Montell Moore.
Speaking to Bees Player after the draw Louis said it would have been an injustice if his side hadn’t got anything from the game.
The 20-year-old thought The Bees dominated the game and should have got more than just the one point they did get.
“It’s good that we stopped the rot and didn’t lose again,” said Louis.
“Today on the basis of the game we should have won.
“We had a lot of possession but we need to make it count next week.
“At half-time we came in at 0-0 and thought that we had bossed the game.
“They had a little ten minute spell where they were on top and had a few corners but nothing of much intensity.
“Second-half we controlled it again but obviously their goal was an absolute wonder-strike.
“We had to keep building and I think we did that.
“We just need to be a bit more clinical in the final third and in their box.
“It was very important to get that goal straight away.
“With the run that we have been on some of the boys head might have gone down but we got straight back on the front foot attacking and Betinho’s goal was a nice finish.”
The draw stopped a run of four defeats in the last five games as the Development Squad endure a tough start to the new season.
After friendly defeats to Staines Town and Welling Town The Bees started their league season with a 4-2 defeat to Crewe Alexandra.
A win over Coventry City was followed up last week by a 3-2 defeat to Colchester in a game which Brentford led 2-0 after 10 minutes.
Louis said that after such a run of results it showed great character for The Bees to react to going behind and make sure that they got at least a point.
“It has been tough over the last few weeks,” said Louis.
“It hasn’t been the best mood in the camp.
“We have been a bit down but we have reacted well.
“Last week we were good as a team even though we lost and today we were better again which is good.
“Hopefully we can build on it again for next week.
“It shows the group has got a bit of character.
“It might not look that way in the last few weeks when we have been conceding so many goals.
“We showed today that we have character and that we can dig in.
“We were 1-0 down and we have bounced back which is good.”
Louis was deployed as the deepest lying midfielder for Monday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.
With Montell Moore, Charlie Adams and Jon Toral all attack minded midfielders alongside him Louis said it was important that he gave some defensive cover in the midfield.
Louis felt that the midfield as a whole dealt well with The Owls pressing tactics and thought that once they dealt with the press they were able to impose themselves on the game.
“I was told not to venture forward too much,” said Louis.
“I wanted to keep it ticking and give the ball to all the boys with the talent.
“I was very important defensively to sit in front of the back two.
“In the first-half it was Tony Craig and Daniel O’Shaughnessy but when Tony went off it was important for us all to be a bit more vocal because he is a big vocal influence on the team.
“I think they tried pressing us but in the opening stages we knocked it around quite nicely.
“We might not have been creating many chances but we were getting through the press nicely.
“When you do that they drop off a bit and that is when you get the time and you can play how you want to play.
“Hopefully then you get the rewards.”
Monday’s game was Louis’ first 90 minutes of the competitive season after an injury hit pre-season.
The 20-year-old midfielder said it was good to get through 90 minutes for the first time this campaign.
With each game Louis feels he is getting back to his best and hopes that, with a good run of games, he can get himself back into first-team contention.
“It was good to get my first 90 minutes in,” said Louis.
“I have played a couple of 70 minutes and I was blowing a bit in the last ten minutes.
“It was good to get the first 90 in though.
“Hopefully I can get another 90 in next week.
“I played a bit in pre-season but I never got a full 90 minutes, full 90 minutes.
“That is what I want to get.
“I want a run of games and once that happens and you get a bit of confidence anything can happen.
“I was better defensively today and my passing is getting there.
“There were a few sloppy ones where I gave the ball away but that is going to happen.
“I need to try and cut them out and hopefully progress.”
