Shaleum Logan praised the way the Brentford players stuck together to get their first away win of the 2012/13 npower League One season.
The Bees beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park yesterday with Clayton Donaldson scoring the only goal.
Shaleum, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford produced a “great performance” and the squad were elated.
“Everybody is really happy with the performance,” said the right back.
“This was probably one of our better performances this season.
“We have shown we can stick in to the end and keep a clean sheet to get a 1-0 win.
“You need to stick together at a place like this, we all did.
“We tried to press high up and we know when we are 1-0 up with ten minutes to go they will throw everything at us, they have nothing to lose.
“As a back four and a team we won the first balls and second balls.
“It was a great performance.”
Brentford have been ahead in three of their previous seven away League One games this season, and held the upper hand in at least two others, without collecting maximum points.
Shaleum said the players were aware they should have won some of those games and Manager Uwe Rösler had worked in training on seeing games out.
“In training we work on it,” he explained.
“The gaffer [Uwe Rösler] will tell one team they are 1-0 up with five minutes to go and to manage the game.
“Sometimes it goes to plan, sometimes not.
“When you have 8,000 to 9,000 people against you it is different.
“You have players that really want to score.
“It’s totally different but we managed it well.
“We’re really proud.
“We know we should have won some of our away games.
“This league is tough and games can turn.
“This is one of the hardest places to come and I think we deserved it.
“We are all really happy.”
The only goal of the game was scored in the ninth minute when Clayton Donaldson headed in an Adam Forshaw free kick.
Shaleum said the goal gave The Bees a buzz and they knew if they stuck to their plan they would win.
“I’m so pleased for Clayton, he worked so hard for us today,” said Shaleum.
“He got across the near post and scored a great header.
“It have us such a buzz.
“The gaffer told us we would win.
“We believed it.
“We thought we had better players than Portsmouth and we did everything to plan.
“We knew if we stuck to the plan we would get a win.”
More than 1,000 Brentford fans made the trip to Fratton Park and Shaleum said he wanted to get the points for them.
“I am really happy for the fans, they gave us great support,” he said.
“There were about a thousand of them on a Tuesday night, that’s really good.
“Brentford fans are great.
“Fair play to them for travelling, I’m glad we got a win for them.”
