Shaleum Logan said Brentford showed they had a “never-say-die attitude” in their pre-season friendly win over Cardiff City.
The Bees went 2-0 down to the Premier League side in the first half but came back to win 3-2.
During the 2012/13 season Brentford repeatedly came from behind to win or draw, scoring an uncountable number of late goals.
Shaleum, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said the players had shown that would carry on in to 2013/14.
He said The Bees struggled for a period in the first half but steadied – when they switched from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 system – and then took control.
He said Cardiff, who have just signed goalkeeper Simon Moore from The Bees, showed what quality they had but Brentford did so too.
“Last year we went behind in a few games and we showed we had a never-say-die attitude,” said Shaleum.
“We carried that on.
“There were 15 minutes when we were under the cosh, Cardiff looked very strong, we weren’t playing well.
“But we held in there and got a goal.
“We went in 2-1 down, the Manager had a word and we were up for it in the second half.
“We needed to stabilise at 2-0, other teams might have crumbled.
“We had four or five good chances and we knew at 2-1 we were in the game.
“It was good for us to be only one down at half time.
“Cardiff played really well and they showed why they were promoted to the Premier League last year.
“Guys like Craig Bellamy, Frazier Campbell and Peter Whittingham, especially, he is so good.
“The lads did really well to hold their own.
“Cardiff have just signed Simon Moore from us, we know how good he is, there is quality throughout the squad.
“Anyone involved for them will be good.
“We gave a great account of ourselves.”
Brentford have been back in pre-season training for five weeks and Shaleum said it had been tough but enjoyable, particularly a training camp in Germany earlier this month.
He said he had seen the quality in the squad improve since he arrived in summer 2011 and there was real competition for places.
He said competing against Javi Venta for a right back spot would push him on and all the players knew they would have to play well to keep their places.
“Pre-season has been tough but enjoyable,” said Shaleum.
“Germany was tough and it was really good.
“I feel really fit.
“The hard pre-season will only be in our favour.
“I was the first signing when Uwe Rösler took over as Brentford Manager and I have seen it develop.
“The current squad has strength in depth everywhere.
“No-one can think they are safe in the team.
“Javi Venta has come in as competition for me and there are eight or nine players in midfield who would get in any team in the division.
“If you play well you will play, if not you will be on the bench.
“Players will push each other.
“Everyone wants to play games, not just sit on the bench and take home the wages.
“I want the shirt and I don’t expect to have it if I don’t play well.
“If I don’t have it, I will push for it.
“The Manager will have tough decisions.”
Brentford start their Sky Bet League One season with a trip to Port Vale on Saturday and then face Sheffield United at home in their next league game a week later.
Shaleum said he was looking forward to it and wanted to go one step better than last season when The Bees finished third in the table and lost the League One Play-Off Final.
“The feel around the Club, and the way we play, means it will be very difficult to take points off us,” said the defender.
“I like our start, with Port Vale and then Sheffield United.
“We came so close last year; the players want it this year.
“We will get it.”
