Leon Redwood said he wanted to show Brighton and Hove Albion “what they had let go”.
Leon scored the first goal for Brentford’s Development Squad in a 2-1 win on the south coast in an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South match last night.
The left sided player said he wanted to do well for Brentford but also to show the club that released him in the summer that they may have made a mistake.
“I was a little bit tense earlier today but when I got down here I was very relaxed,” said Leon, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“I wanted to come here, do a job and show Brighton what they let go.
“My aim was to get three points.
“I wanted to do it for Brentford, that’s my team.
“I wanted to show people what they are missing.”
Leon came through the ranks on the south coast and was part of the Brighton team that came to Griffin Park for a Development Squad friendly last December.
Brighton won 2-0 that afternoon and Brentford barely had a kick.
He said the Brentford players wanted to get one back on Brighton after that afternoon and were up for the challenge.
“It’s a very good result,” he said.
“When I was at Brighton last year we played at Brentford, that was not a good day for Brentford.
“As a Brentford player, I wanted to be part of a group that got one back.
“Brighton had one over us.
“We were up for it.
“First half we gave a very, very good performance.
“We put it all in.
“Second half we got a little bit tired.
“That is always likely to happen when you work so hard in the first half.
“Brighton play a way where they are really spread out, we had to cover a lot of ground to match them.
“We had to go up and down, backwards and forward, it was hard on the legs.
“As a whole team, we fought and won our battles.
“We wanted it more.”
Leon scored the first goal of the night when he got across his man to turn home a Josh Clarke cross.
He said he was “hungry” to get on the score sheet.
“It was important to make a good start count and we did that as we went 2-0 up,” he said.
“I wanted to get a goal.
“I saw Josh was going to cross it so I burst in to the box.
“I was hungry for a goal.
“If Josh beats the player, I know what is coming next, a ball ion the box.
“I would rather be inside the two sticks that out the other side waiting for the ball to come through.
“If I’m inside the two sticks and the ball comes, I score.”
