Club captain Kevin O’Connor said Brentford played well enough to have won the opening game of the 2013/14 season.
The Bees drew 1-1 with Port Vale at Vale Park on Saturday and dominated almost exclusively.
They went ahead through Shaleum Logan but Vale equalised when a cross from the right was blocked by Brentford’s goal scorer and fell fortunately for Doug Loft.
Kevin, speaking to The Bees Player Show after the match, said Brentford just needed a bit of luck to take the win and had the better of the match on the share of chances.
“I thought we had our chances and on another day we could have nicked it,” he said.
“The conditions weren’t ideal but they were the same for both sides.
“We knew they would be big, strong and direct, we had done our homework on them and we tried to combat that.
“We were just missing a bit of luck.
“They got a break for their goal, Shay made a block and their guy put it away.
“We’ll take the positives, it is not a bad point, and we’ll move on.
“It was a good performance and could have won on the share of chances.”
Clayton Donaldson also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He said he thought Brentford played really well.
“The pitch is huge, they didn’t water it and that made it difficult for players to run with the ball as we like to,” said the striker.
“I think they did their homework there.
“We created plenty of chances and the big pitch helped us get in behind them.
“It was an opportunity for us to get three points but one is not the end of the world.
“I thought we played really well today.
“There are little things that need freshening up, that will come.”
Clayton came closest to winning the game for Brentford in the second half.
He latched on to a George Saville pass and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Chris Neal but saw it cannon away off the crossbar.
Clayton partnered new signing Will Grigg in attack and he said he felt the pair linked up well.
“I saw the ball was going in behind the centre half and the keeper came and then stopped,” he said.
“I knew he was out of his area so I had to lob him.
“The ball just didn’t come down as quickly as I hoped.
“It hit the crossbar.
“On another day it would have gone in.
“It was good we created lots of chances.
“Everyone is positive.
“Will and I combined well today; we created a few chances for each other.
“You can see that partnership will come together and when it does it will be unstoppable.”
Kevin played alongside Harlee Dean in the centre of defence.
The skipper has played most of his career in midfield and at right back but said he enjoyed the change.
“It was a different position for me, the left centre half,” said Kevin.
“I am still learning it.
“I am enjoying playing alongside Harlee and Jake Bidwell.
“It’s good fun and I am enjoying playing.
“Harlee and I talk an awful lot on the pitch; we work hard for each other and try to do the best we can.”
Kevin said Brentford would have to get used to teams playing defensively against them this season and it was important to be good defensively.
“At home teams will come and park the bus,” said the skipper.
“We have to be patient and we have to not give teams goals.
“If we keep clean sheets we will win an awful lot of games.”
Brentford started the season among the favourites for promotion and Clayton said the team should take confidence from that.
“It’s good to be favourites,” he said.
“If we are being tipped to go up we should be able to take that in our stride.
“We should take confidence from everyone believing we should be up there.”
