Kevin O’Connor said Brentford did enough to deserve their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Crawley Town.
Sam Saunders scored the only goal of the game as The Bees beat Crawley 1-0 to book a place in the Southern Section Quarter Final.
Brentford also beat the Sussex side 2-1 in an npower League One game on Saturday and Kevin said The Bees started as well as they did three days earlier but Crawley improved.
However, he felt Brentford were the better team.
“I think we deserved it,” said the Club Captain, speaking to Bees Player.
“We started really well in the first 20 minutes and then it probably evened out a little bit.
“They had a few chances, so did we.
“Once we got it down and played, rather than going long, we cut them open and had the clearer chances.
“We started like we did last Saturday but they grew in to the game.
“It was an even game, but, chances wise, we deserved it.
“You always feel that a goal might not come when time is running out but we kept going and Sam came up with a good finish.”
Kevin came in to the team at right back and played in a defence which also included Leon Legge, Harlee Dean and Tony Craig in front of Richard Lee.
There were five changes to the team which beat Crawley on Saturday and Kevin said to be able to play well and win after the re-shuffled showed how good the squad is.
“I had Leggy next to me and Harlee and Tony have been playing really well,” said Kevin.
“It was nice to come in and get a clean sheet.
“We are pleased with that.
“There is an awful lot of experience in there.
“Richard played his first game for six months and was superb.
“I am always talking to Leggy and Harlee and Tony look after each other so it worked really well.
“The manager made a few changes tonight but it was still a high quality game.
“That shows the strength in depth.
“This is definitely one of the strongest, if not the strongest, squads I have played in.
“It’s very good.
“The gaffer [Uwe Rösler] has always talked about what he wants with players resting and playing certain games.
“The players that came in pre-season were told too.
“He has been open and honest with us.”
Brentford are now in the last 16 and will be seeking a fourth appearance in the Final of the competition.
Kevin was part of the team which lost the 2011 Final to Carlisle United and the squad which lost the 2001 Final to Port Vale and said he wanted to go on another run.
“We have had a couple of Finals in my time, unfortunately we lost them both,” he said.
“Last season we got very close again, perhaps we should have beaten Barnet [in the Southern Section Semi-Final].
“We always enjoy this competition, we take it seriously, and we will see how far we can go.”
The Bees currently sit ninth in npower League One, just outside the top six.
They have lost one of their last ten in all competitions and head to Scunthorpe United on Saturday./
Kevin said Brentford would travel in positive mood and could use the memories of their last away game, becoming the first team to stop League One leaders Tranmere Rovers winning at their Prenton Park home, to give them a further boost.
“We have been unfortunate in some games but overall we have been solid and it’s very positive,” said Kevin, describing the season so far.
“We played Tranmere a couple of weeks ago and played really well so hopefully that’s a good sign for us.
“We go to Scunthorpe next, it’s not always easy, it’s a very tight ground.
“Hopefully we can pick up the three points again.
“We have to be positive but not big-headed.
“We have to do what we do well.
“If we do the basics well, we have a good chance.”
