Alan Judge said he was still a game or two away from full match fitness after making his Brentford debut on Saturday.
Alan joined The Bees on loan from Blackburn Rovers last week and will remain at Griffin Park for the rest of the season.
He played 67 minutes in the Sky Bet League One win against Port Vale on Saturday.
Alan, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the game, said he found the pace of the game tough in the early stages but found a second wind and felt good.
He said he would be better with another week of training behind him.
“I will need another game or two for full match fitness,” said Alan.
“I will have a week of training this week and will do extra fitness work.
“I felt good.
“I didn’t want to come off but it was protecting me from injury.
“After the first ten minutes I looked over to the bench and told them I had forgotten how quick the games are.
“Especially the way the lads play, with high pressing.
“I was hoping I got a second wind.”
Upon signing Alan said he did not think he would start games immediately but came straight in to the starting line-up as Brentford were hit by injuries to Jonathan Douglas and Adam Forshaw.
He said he was delighted to start and felt he played OK in the game, which Brentford won 2-0 thanks to strikes from Marcello Trotta and Will Grigg.
Alan said he felt Brentford’s style would suit him and he wasn’t surprised how good The Bees were as they had played well last season – when he played against them for Notts County – and had just got better.
“I think I did OK, maybe I should have scored,” said Alan, who tested Port Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal on a couple of occasions.
“I was enjoying playing, some of the football is great.
“Playing this football can only benefit me as a player.
“The lads have taken me in since I have been here.
“I found out this morning I would play.
“There are a few injuries.
“I wasn’t expecting to be playing but I was delighted.
“Brentford’s level hasn’t surprised me.
“They played like this last year and it has just got better.
“One of the main reasons to come was that I wanted to be part of what is happening.”
After an even start Brentford took control midway through the first half.
They took the lead when Marcello Trotta smashed in from 25 yards and could have had many more but for Port Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal.
Will Grigg sealed the win late on.
Alan said he enjoyed playing with Marcello.
“I knew Marcello was good,” said the on-loan man. “I didn’t know he was that good.
“He shoots on sight, he has a great left foot.
“It helps me as I can come in off the line and play one-twos with him.
“I look forward to playing with him a lot more.
“I was surprised Brentford managed to extend his loan.
“He can go higher.
“It benefits me to come off the line and play with him.”
The win was Brentford’s eighth Sky Bet League One win in a row and their 13th in their last 14.
The Bees are top of the table, a point ahead of Leyton Orient, and Alan said they go out to win every game.
He said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton wanted them to attack and win games.
“We are top now,” said Alan.
“We go out to win every game, that has been installed in the players.
“We take each game as it comes and set ourselves targets.
“We go out to win every game.
“I am not a good defender.
“The best way to defend is attack.
“The best way to win games is scoring goals.”
