Jonathan Douglas said his stoppage time goal against Oldham Athletic was better and more important than others he had scored because Brentford won the match.
The midfield man headed in a Sam Saunders cross two minutes in to stoppage time to give Brentford an eighth Sky Bet League One win in nine games.
Jonathan came up with late goals last season, most notably against Tranmere Rovers, to give Brentford a share of the spoils but this time it was worth more.
“That’s probably the most important late goal I’ve scored for Brentford,” said Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“When I have scored late on in other games it has been to get a point.
“That was for three.
“To score is always nice.
“I think we deserved it overall, we kept pushing them.
“We were lucky enough to get the goal.”
Jonathan said he made his late run in to the penalty area hoping Sam Saunders would come up with the right delivery.
“Sam has great delivery with both feet,” he explained.
“I didn’t know where it would go but I was hoping it would reach me.
“I was lucky he did.
“I knew it was coming to me and I had a chance.
“It hit my head and went in.
“To score a goal in any game is pretty good.
“It was to get us three points and we are happy with that.”
Jonathan said he felt Brentford deserved the win overall.
Oldham came content to play on the counter-attack and although they had chances, David Button was not overly busy.
“They came with a game plan,” said Jonathan.
“We knew we had to keep passing the ball and we would wear them down.
“Luckily enough we did that.
“We worked on their plan in the week, we thought they would come and counter-attack.
“Most teams do that here now, let us have the ball in front of them and wait for trigger points to go at us.
“We defended well when we needed to, kept pushing and got what we deserved.”
Hours before an FA Cup with Budweiser Second Round tie at Carlisle United last Saturday, December 7, Uwe Rösler left his position as Brentford Manager to take up the same role at Wigan Athletic.
Mark Warburton, formerly Sporting Director, was named as Brentford boss a few days later.
Jonathan admitted it had been a difficult start to week but something he was used to – he recalled being at Leeds United amid regular manager changes.
The midfield player said Mark Warburton had kept things simple in the first week and not much needed to change with Brentford on a fine run.
“It was difficult when we heard the previous manager had left,” said Jonathan.
“Mark has come in, he is doing a good job and we have to dust ourselves off.
“It is up to us to give him the wins and keep everyone smiling.
“This is not a new experience for me.
“I was at Leeds four years and had four different managers.
“You have to keep going and keep working.
“We don’t need to change much, we are going well.
“The new gaffer knows that and has kept everything simple and moving in the right direction.”
Brentford are third in Sky Bet League One, three points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers in second and four behind leaders Leyton Orient.
Jonathan said with Mark Warburton in charge he expected things to keep rolling on as Brentford headed in to the busy Christmas period.
“We have got ourselves in to a good position,” he said.
“Someone new coming in would bring in a new style of play.
“There is no need for that.
“The Owner has put Mark in place and everything will keep rolling on.
“We are doing well; we are third, four points off the top.
“Christmas is a main period and we need to pick up points and climb towards the top spot.”
Brentford play four games in 11 days in a busy Christmas period – away matches against fourth-placed Preston North End and fifth-placed Peterborough United sandwiching home games against Play-Off chasers Swindon Town and Milton Keynes Dons.
Jonathan said the Club’s back room staff would be very important in that period.
The Bees travel to Preston next Saturday, December 21, and Jonathan said he was looking forward to it.
“Christmas can be difficult, with high intensity games close together,” he said.
“But you have to recover well in between games.
“The back room staff are different class; they know what we need to do.
“It is up to us to look after ourselves.
“We have a big squad and if we need to rotate we will.
“A couple of seasons ago we didn’t do well against the teams at the top.
“We have been better this season.
“It will be a difficult game at Preston.
“They are playing well but we’re looking forward to it.”
