Brentford Development Squad Manager was unhappy despite a 2-1 victory over Swansea City in an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South clash.
The Bees scored a goal in each half to take the points but Jon said their performance “wasn’t good enough”.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match, he said the first half was OK but the second was poor.
He said his players did not pass the ball well enough but could not fault their effort.
The Bees went in to the game needing three wins from their final three games to have any chance of finishing in the top two in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table and Jon said wins were important but he wanted performances too.
“It wasn’t good enough,” he said.
“I did say last week it was all about winning and we wanted to win the last three games.
“But we wanted to do it with quality and I don’t think we did that.
“First half we did OK, showed glimpses.
“In the second half we were really poor.
“Tactically the players were good and they worked hard but technically we weren’t at the level.
“We played with three centre forwards, which we haven’t done this season, and I thought the shape worked well.
“We didn’t get hold of the ball and pass it well enough.
“We played off too many touches at times, didn’t want the ball and were careless in possession.”
The Bees played a more direct style and Jon said they wanted to start like that and then pass the ball more as the game went on but didn’t manage to do it.
Brentford included Club Captain Kevin O’Connor and striker Farid El Alagui.
The pair are completing their recovery from long-term ankle and knee injuries respectively and both completed 90 minutes.
Jake Reeves, who has been a First Team substitute in recent weeks, played for just over an hour.
Jon said First Team Manager Uwe Rösler has been forced to play a slightly longer game in recent weeks and it was important the younger players could do the same.
“The First Team Manager has talked about changing the style recently because of the pitches,” said Jon.
“I had a conversation and we felt that for the development of our players for the First Team and for players like Farid, Kevin and Jake, they need to be prepared to play that.
“Development Squad games are sometimes a little but nice.
“For the first 20 minutes we made a conscious decision to go a bit longer so they can do it if needed.
“The aim was to pass it more in the second half, although I don’t think we saw it.
“We probably passed it better when we were going direct.
“We wanted to get hold of the ball in the second half and dominate possession.
“We didn’t do that.
“Our ambition is that teams play us and go away thinking this Brentford team is a good team.
“We got the result against Swansea but they may feel hard done by.”
Brentford started well and scored inside five minutes when Farid El Alagui headed in a Charlie Adams corner.
Aaron Pierre hit a post and Sam Griffiths also went close as Brentford dominated without turning their advantage to goals.
They got a second immediately after half time when Leon Redwood slotted home but Swansea came straight back in to it.
Trialist goalkeeper Nick Hamann was robbed by Rory Donnelly, who scored to give Swansea a lifeline.
Brentford maintained their control, however, and never looked like losing, although they couldn’t add to their lead.
“The goals were good goals,” said Jon.
“First half we created some good chances.
“I am pleased to have scored the goals and when you look at the stats I don’t think our keeper had a save to make.
“They scored a goal when they nicked the ball off his feet, a mistake from him, but apart from that I don’t think they had any chances.
“We looked good at both ends of the pitch, that we might score a few goals and look defensively solid.
“It was the bit in between that wasn’t good enough.
“We were 2-0 up when they scored.
“The only way they would get back in to the game is if they scored quickly.
“They did that.”
Jon said Brentford’s decision making cost them at times.
“There were times all over the pitch when we took too many touches,” he explained.
“The game was played in our attacking half in the first half.
“Where it is so tight, with both teams playing three in midfield, you have to get the ball and move it quickly.
“If you have space, have a run, but I felt our players were trying to force it rather than moving it on to someone else.
“It is down to decision making but also down to technique sometimes.
“If your first touch isn’t good enough, you need a second one and a third one.”
The win took Brentford back above Queens Park Rangers in to third in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table.
They are four points behind Charlton Athletic, who went back to the top of the table by beating Ipswich Town last night, and second-placed Cardiff City.
Cardiff have only one game to play and if they slip up, Brentford could secure a top two finish.
“Cardiff play Barnet on Wednesday and hopefully they will drop points,” said Jon.
“All we can do is win our games.
“If we do that we will finish third and I will be happy with that.
“Hopefully we will finish higher.”
