Jon Toral said Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship match against Wigan Athletic was undoubtedly the biggest of his fledgling career so far.
Brentford need to beat Wigan on Saturday, May 2, to have any chance of making the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs.
A win would take them to 78 points, a total that is usually more than enough for a top-six finish but may not be this season.
Derby County are sixth, two points ahead with a far greater goal difference, while Ipswich Town are fifth, three points better off and with a goal difference three better.
If Ipswich or Derby lose on Saturday, a two-goal win would ensure a Play-Off place for The Bees, barring a large win for Wolverhampton Wanderers or Ipswich scoring at least six goals and still losing.
Jon, speaking to Bees Player this week, said Brentford were only focussing on themselves.
He admitted if results went their way and Brentford did not win it would be particularly disappointing so said the only target was beating Wigan.
“I have not had a long career but this is definitely the biggest game of it,” he said.
“We have to focus on ourselves and win the game.
“We then have to hope other results go our way.
“We know that if we do our job we have a chance.
“We have to win the game against Wigan and do it in a good way.
“We will then see what happens.
“The biggest focus is winning our game.
“If we don’t do that, nothing else matters.
“We have to hope other teams help us.”
Brentford took the Play-Off race to the final day of the season with a win over Reading on Saturday, April 25.
Alan Judge scored one and set up the second for James Tarkowski as The Bees took the points in Berkshire.
Jon said the players knew in advance they had to win but he approached every game in the same manner.
“It was a very good performance,” said the midfield player, on loan from Arsenal.
“We knew it was a ‘must-win’ game.
“If we hadn’t won we wouldn’t have a chance.
“It was an important win and a good performance to give us confidence for the last game.
“We hope the Wigan game goes the same way.
“I think of every game as a must-win game so it is not too much of a difference.”
Jon joined The Bees on loan from Arsenal at the start of the campaign.
He has played 36 games for Brentford, the first of his career, and scored six goals.
The 20-year-old suffered with knee injuries early in his career but said he had coped physically with the demands of the Sky Bet Championship.
“I am very happy with the loan,” said Jon.
“This has been my first professional season and I am happy it has been with Brentford, I have learned a lot from the staff and players.
“The fans have also helped me.
“I have gone forward and I am thankful to Brentford and Arsenal for giving me a chance.
“I didn’t have targets, I just wanted to learn.
“I think I have done that.”
Jon admitted the season had been a challenge but he said he had coped.
He played 34 Championship games, starting eight of them, and has made ten starts in all competitions.
“I struggled at the beginning,” said the midfield player.
“You have to get used to the league, the players and everything physically.
“It was hard because it was new but I have coped and learned a lot.
“The players here are physically in good shape and we have been ready all season to play two games a week.
“We have proved that.
“It is challenging but if you do everything well between games you can do it.”
Jon said he hoped the highlight of his season was still to come.
But he picked out a hat-trick against Blackpool in February as the best moment so far.
He said he would take lots of happy memories from his year at Griffin Park.
“The game where I scored my first hat-trick was the highlight personally,” said Jon.
“But I hope the highlight for the team is still to come.
“It has always been my aim to go back to Arsenal and prove I can play there.
“I am very happy with the season at Brentford and I have learned a lot.
“There have been happy memories and I will take them and move forward.”
