Jon De Souza said poor decisions cost Brentford’s Development Squad dear against Bristol City.
The Bees conceded two goals in the last ten minutes to lose 3-2 at Ashton Gate in a Professional Development League game.
Brentford started well and scored inside 40 seconds but City equalised from a corner before half time.
Antonio German restored the lead after the break but City took control and scored twice late on.
“I was really pleased with how we played until we went 2-1 up,” said Development Squad Manager Jon.
“After that, I felt they reacted to the score line and tried to get back in to it.
“We didn’t manage the game and made really poor decisions with and without the ball.
“In the first half we could have been three or four up at least.
“We had lots of good chances and limited them.
“Their goal came from a set piece, which was disappointing, but apart from that we limited them.
“They didn’t have any clear cut chances – we looked a real threat going forwards.
“I told the players if we continued to do that and showed more quality in front of goal, we’d be fine.
“The second half was similar, they had possession but we had a threat going forwards.
“We went 2-1 up and didn’t manage the game well enough after that.”
Jon, speaking exclusively to Bees Player, said Brentford did not do enough to halt City’s momentum.
“When you go 2-1 up, especially when points are at stake, the other team will try and get back in to the game,” he said.
“We were too deep at times and didn’t mark properly at times.
“Then, when you get possession, you can’t give it straight back.
“We defended relatively well at times, got hold of the ball and gave it straight back.
“That gave them another opportunity to attack.
“Sometimes you have to keep the ball and kill their momentum.”
Jon said he was pleased with his team’s attacking but needed to score more goals.
“First half our attacking play was quite good and Antonio took his goal very well,” he said.
“He looked a threat, as did Harry Forrester.
“I was pleased but we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.
“We could have won the first half 3-0 or 4-0, we need to put the ball in the goal.
“We played against a Championship side with some First Team players, although we maybe had more, and bettered them for at least 60 minutes.
“I’m just disappointed with the way we finished the game.
“We should have won the game and we didn’t.”
