John Swift felt it was a good all-round team performance at Griffin Park on Tuesday night as Brentford swept aside Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 to record a first win in five matches. The on-loan Chelsea midfielder bundled home the opener seven minutes before the break while Sergi Canos made it 2-0 11 minutes after the interval. The 20-year-old then completed the scoring midway through the second-half as The Bees moved back into the top half of the Sky Bet Championship table.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match John said: “It was a very satisfying night for the fans and for the players to get the three goals and the clean sheet. Everyone played well, put in a shift and deserved to get the three points. Everyone was playing with confidence at the end and we were trying things. If it had been 1-0 or 2-0 we might have been a bit more cautious but with the three goals everyone was confident and playing really well. We have always been trying to play the right way and you have to give credit to some of the teams that we have come up against. Today was a great performance and hopefully we can take it on to Saturday.”
John’s brace took his total for the season to six goals since joining on loan from Chelsea back in October. The midfielder said he has been working on playing higher up the pitch and getting in dangerous areas in recent weeks and was pleased to see that work pay off.
“I toe-poked the first one and the goalkeeper made the save but it has come flying back at me,” said John. “I just tried to get in the way of it and it has come off me, off their defender and finally gone in. It doesn’t matter how it goes in as long as it goes in. For the second Sergi Canos did unbelievably well down the side to get round the defender and get the cross in so it’s all credit to Sergi. I have to be there to score so I am delighted. I felt like I was playing a bit too deep at times so I have been trying to get into the box as much as I can. I did that today and got two goals from being in the right place at the right time.”
Tuesday’s victory sets The Bees up for a run of fixtures against sides they have already beaten so far this season. Next up for John and the team are Rotherham United and Charlton Athletic who were defeated 2-1 and 3-0 respectively back in October. While John won’t be taking anything for granted he admits that those earlier wins do help to give the team added belief.
“We have already beaten Rotherham United and Charlton Athletic this season so if we go into the games the way that we have finished today we will do very well,” said John. “Having beaten them both they know what we can do and we know that they are beatable. They are always hard games in the Championship so we won’t be taking anything for granted. If we can get them on the back foot early then we can take the game to them like we did against Wolves.”
