Clayton Donaldson said Brentford’s aim to reach the Second Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser had been achieved.
The Bees beat Blue Square Bet South Boreham Wood 2-0 yesterday to book a place in the Second Round.
Clayton, who scored the first goal, said there was always the possibility of an upset in the FA Cup and the result was the only thing that mattered
“It was job done,” he said.
“FA Cup games are ones where the performance doesn’t really matter, it is all about results.
“It is one game and small clubs can knock out league clubs.
“It was all about getting through and the way we did it was pleasing.
“You are always expected to win but you can never be too sure.
“There have been giant killings ever since the cup was created.
“You always have that in the back of your mind.
“We should have the quality to make it through and we did that.
“We did it comfortably in the second half.
“The first half was a bit shaky but the main thing was to get through.”
Clayton scored the first goal of the afternoon, cutting inside and firing in to the far corner.
He also played a part in the move for the second goal, scored by Harry Forrester.
Clayton said that goal, just before half time, ended the contest.
“The second goal finished the game,” he told Bees Player after the match.
“It was good to get the first goal but they were still creating, still dangerous.
“You could see in their faces they knew it would be difficult to get two or three goals.
“In the second half the stuffing was knocked out of them.
“There could have been more goals for us.”
Clayton said he was pleased with his goal and paid tribute to Boreham Wood goalkeeper James Russell who “kept the score down” in the second half.
“I have done that a few times this season – got the ball by the corner flag and cut inside,” said Clayton, discussing his goal.
“It opened up and I was able to get the shot away.
“In the warm-up everything I hit went over.
“I was pleased to hit the target and luckily it went in.
“Second half their goalkeeper was tremendous; he made some world class saves.
“He kept the score down.
“We are happy with 2-0, just to get through to the next round.
“We always look for the Premier League boys in the Third Round.
“We have to get there; we won’t look too far ahead.
“We are in the draw and hopefully we can get a home tie.”
