Jan Holldack felt that little mistakes were decisive as Colchester United came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 in the U21 Professional Development League Two South on Monday afternoon. Holldack gave The Bees the lead with a powerful effort midway through the first-half but Macauley Bonne stuck either side of the break for the visitors as they took the points and leapfrogged Flemming Pedersen’s side in the process.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Jan said: “We scored the first goal and then we controlled the game. We had chances to get a second goal but we couldn’t put into practice what we had been doing in training. We did little things wrong and Colchester United did those better than us and that made the difference today. If we could have got the second goal we would have kept going and we could have smashed the other team. Going to 1-1 meant we had to work harder and we couldn’t keep the ball.”
Jan’s goal was his tenth in all competitions this season from 20 matches. While the 19-year-old was pleased to get on the scoresheet he admitted it would have meant a lot more if the team had points to show for his strike.
“It was nice for me to score,” said Jan. “I now have nine league goals in 17 league games. I am happy because I scored but when you lose, the goal isn’t as important. If you score and you win, you can enjoy it but if you lose then the goal doesn’t really count.”
The German Youth International has trained with the first-team on a number of occasions in recent weeks since his summer move from FC Koln and feels he knows the areas which he has to work on in order to push himself towards the first-team group.
“I have to play faster and I have to work on my headers,” said Jan. “I am working a lot on winning the second balls with Flemming Pedersen. If we keep working them I will improve and the team will improve as well.”
