Brentford defender James Tarkowski gave his reaction to the 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, a result that sees Mark Warburton’s side in seventh place with three league matches remaining.
His side dominated the match but were undone by Kieran Lee's 75th minute winner.
“The boys are a bit down, it’s a tough one to take,” said James.
“We’ve not played too poorly; we’ve had chances to win the game and then conceded.
“We’re told to play out from the back and always do, I’ve played a ball into Jon [Toral] and it’s been nicked off him and we’ve been outnumbered.
“We had our chances to score ourselves and we have to put them away.”
James conceded that it wasn’t just down to scoring goals, and that the defence need to obtain more clean sheets in order to gain victory.
“In games likes that, if you go one or two up, defend the lead, I don’t think would have got caught like we did,” said James.
“But you can’t put all the blame on the front men; we’ve got to keep more clean sheets.
“We know that between ourselves.”
The Hillsborough pitch looked in poor condition, but the 22-year-old refused to use the playing surface as an excuse for Brentford’s defeat.
“The pitch looked a lot worse than it played, said James.
“There were one or two bobbles but I thought we moved the ball reasonably well considering the conditions.
“We managed to play on it enough so we can’t really blame that.”
With three league matches remaining, James maintained the focus should be on putting things right rather than blaming others.
“Individually, and as a team, we have to pick ourselves up,” said James.
“There’s no point in pointing fingers now as to why we’re losing games, we need to get around each other and move on to the next game.
“There are three [league] games left and we’ve got to look to win as many games as we can.”
