James Ferry felt everything went Brentford’s way as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over local rivals Queens Park Rangers in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South on Monday afternoon.
Goals from Jan Holldack and Montell Moore had The Bees 2-0 ahead inside 11 minutes before Jack Bonham saved a Samba Diakite penalty on the quarter hour.
The Bees had chances to extend their lead and did eventually get a third goal through Jermaine Udumaga with 15 minutes to go.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match James said: “It was a really good day for the team. The result showed that we got everything we wanted from the game and we performed well to go with it. At the start we killed them from the get-go. It was hard for them to get back in it from there but it didn’t really worry us because Jermaine Udumaga scored the third. We were never really worried that they would nick one. With the penalty that Jack Bonham saved it felt like a lot of stuff was going in our favour today.
“We had a lot of chances in the second-half. Zain Westbrooke had a really good little chip that hit the post. We had a lot of chances to score on the counter-attack and Jermaine converted with a great goal. Lee always tells us to kick on and try to kill them off with as many goals as you can. We should never be happy with how things are going. He wants us to keep attacking until you can’t score any more or play any better.”
The win means it is now seven points from a possible nine for Lee Carsley’s side this season after a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City and a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest last time out.
James feels the team is playing well and is high on confidence helped not only by the results but also by the first-team chances afforded to members of the Development Squad in recent weeks.
“We are playing really well at the moment,” said James. “Everything that we did in pre-season helped us to have such a good start. We look strong at the moment and it’s been a really good start for us. We are really confident and happy with how things are going. We want to keep putting in good performances and putting pressure on the first-team guys.
“Having boys making their first-team debuts gives you that bit of hope that you can do it. When guys that you are training with every day are involved in the first-team it gives you that incentive to keep working hard because there could be a chance for you too.”
James has impressed in the centre of midfield in the early weeks of the season but believes his real challenge now is to maintain his form to move closer to breaking into the first-team set-up.
“I am really happy with how I have started off the season,” said James. “It is now about consistency and keeping the form going. A lot of people can have a good spell but it is about whether you can do it throughout the whole season. The first-team boys can do it for the whole season and that is the level that you need to get to. If you keep playing well then the coaches and the staff can’t say that you can’t get a chance.”
