Jake Bidwell said Brentford’s players were frustrated not to have taken three points against Coventry City.
The Bees drew 1-1 at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday despite dominating for long periods.
They fell behind to a disputed penalty at the end of the first half but equalised within a minute of the re-start when Clayton Donaldson crossed for Harry Forrester to score.
Jake, speaking to The Bees Player Show after the match, said Brentford did enough to win, particularly in the second half when Coventry barely mustered a shot at goal.
He said The Bees had to take their point and move on to the next game, against Crewe Alexandra on Wednesday.
“Frustration sums it up,” said Jake.
“We have done enough to get three points, especially in the second half.
“Apart from the shot that hit Simon on the nose, I can’t remember him making a save.
“It’s another point on the board, they all get added up at the end of the season, and now have to move on the Crewe.
“It was probably the worst pitch we have played on this season but it is the same for both teams.
“We like to get the ball down and play but we can adapt to different circumstances.
“I think we showed that today and did enough to win the game.
“The performance was good and we got a point.
“We need to kick on.
“We are a bit disappointed; we think we deserved three points.”
Clayton also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He said Brentford were the better team at the Ricoh Arena.
He added that with five games to go it was all in Brentford’s hands.
The Bees are currently fourth in npower League One but will be promoted if they win all their remaining matches.
“We were the better team overall, created the better chances,” said Clayton.
“The penalty just before half time didn’t help us.
“I thought we showed them a bit too much respect at first.
“We stood off them and let them pass.
“When we had possession the chances and forward play was really good.
“We were unlucky not to lead at half time.
“We had a few chances in the first half.
“In these vital games it is all smash and grab, it’s tense and difficult.
“We need a lucky break.
“But it is all in our hands, if we win our five games, we’re up.
“It’s never as easy as that and there will be twists and turns.”
Jonathan Douglas went close in to the first half for Brentford, heading wide from close range, as did Clayton.
The striker got between Coventry’s central defenders and beat goalkeeper Joe Murphy to a Harry Forrester pass.
He lifted it over the goalkeeper but the ball rolled wide after bouncing wickedly off the pitch.
“As I flicked it over him I thought the bounce was key,” said Clayton.
“It could have gone either way.
“It bounced on to the outside of the post.
“When it left my foot I thought it was a goal.
“It hit the turf and spun out.
“It either goes in or it doesn’t, it’s one of those things.
“The pitch didn’t help, it was difficult to play and it spun that chance away.”
Coventry went ahead at the end of the first half through a disputed penalty.
Harlee Dean tussled with Coventry defender Richard Wood and the City man through himself to the floor.
Referee Scott Mathieson pointed to the spot and Carl Baker converted.
“There were a load of bodies, the fella has thrown himself on the floor,” said Jake.
“I can’t say more than that until I see it again.
“I would be surprised if there was anything in it.”
Brentford came out and scored within a minute of the re-start.
Clayton said: “Conceding just before half time is a blow to any team.
“Everyone was a bit down.
“We could take the positives out of the first half, we edged it.
“We got a goal straight away, 49 seconds in to the second half.
“You can’t ask for more than that.
“It gave us the drive to go on and go for the win.
“We went at them and were the team going for the points.
“We were really unlucky.
“I had a chance at the end.
“Tom Adeyemi had a shot, it hit the defender and looped up, the ball was spinning and I was waiting for it to come down.
“By the time it got to me I was off balance and leaning back.
“On another day, that would have been the match winner.
“We were the team going for the win.”
The draw ended a run of three straight away defeats after losses to Stevenage, Carlisle United and Milton Keynes Dons.
Jake said he hoped it would be the turning point.
“Every team goes through a spell,” he said.
“The last two away performances, against MK Dons and Coventry, have, I think, been good performances.
“If we keep playing like that it will turn round.
“We have stopped the rot today; we had lost three in a row before today.
“Hopefully this will be the starting point for us.”
Brentford’s next match is on Wednesday, when they travel to Crewe.
Crewe won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final yesterday, beating Southend United 2-0 at Wembley.
Jake said Brentford had to start quickly in Cheshire.
“Physically they have a day’s rest less than us and they have to mentally deal with playing in a final,” he said.
“We have to start the game quickly and get at them.
“We don’t want to give them a chance to get going.”
Clayton said he felt four wins would be enough to earn Brentford automatic promotion to The Championship.
“Our target before today was to win four,” he said.
“That is still possible.
“We are in a great position.
“We didn’t deserve to lose last week, we are playing well.
“Hopefully our luck will change away from home and that will set up an interesting end to the season.
“Every game is vital and three points is a must on Wednesday.”
