Will Grigg said Brentford’s players were aware their performance in the home defeat to Rotherham United “wasn’t good enough”.
The Bees were beaten at home by the Yorkshire side on Saturday afternoon.
Defender Mark Bradley headed the only goal of the afternoon from a free kick inside the first 15 minutes and that was enough to give the visitors the win.
Brentford had more possession and territory but couldn’t find the equaliser.
Will, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the final whistle, said Rotherham were well-organised and Brentford couldn’t break them down.
He added there was a little bit of quality missing from the attacking play.
“We gave away a sloppy goal, they sat back and it was hard to break them down,” said Will.
“They are an organised side, we couldn’t get that bit of luck.
“They sat back and we needed the final bit of quality.
“It is what we are missing at the moment, whether it’s a ball in to the box or a finish.
“We worked hard but it’s not quite happening.
“Everyone is disappointed.
“We know it wasn’t good enough.
“We have already lost too many games at home this season.
“If we keep doing the right things it will come.”
Will started the game as a substitute but was brought on at half time by Manager Uwe Rösler.
He said he tried to get in behind the visitors and hold the ball up for others to join in.
“In the first half we struggled to keep hold of the ball and attacks were fizzling out,” said Will.
“The Manager told me to get hold of it and try and make runs in behind.
“We weren’t stretching them or getting it short.
“We had momentum in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half and were on top for most of the second half.
“We just couldn’t quite get in behind or get a shot off.
“There is a reason they haven’t lost many games.
“They are clever in the way they play.
“They do what they do well, they made it difficult and it paid off for them.
“We need killer instinct in the final third.”
The defeat came six days after Brentford had dominated most of their match against Coventry City and taken three points with a 2-0 win.
Will said Brentford had to adapt to different opponents and the players had to put game plans in to action.
“They were two completely different games,” he said.
“We knew what to expect and had to adapt to it.
“Last week we sat off and forced them long.
“Today it is what they wanted.
“Every week will be different.
“It was frustrating not to play as well as we did last week.
“We have to find a way to win games, we have to do it on the pitch and work it out.
“The players have to deliver.”
Will links up with the Northern Ireland squad for two World Cup qualification matches this week and will miss Brentford’s next two games – the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Peterborough United and the League One game against Stevenage.
It is the third time he has been called up since the start of the League One season but Will said he was able to adapt to the changes and was confident his on-field relationships with his team mates would come.
“I have been an international footballer for a few years and going away is something you have to deal with,” he said.
“Sometimes there is a different style of football and you have to adapt.
“But I am used to it, I go away, come back and am straight back in it.
“I don’t think it affects me, I maybe miss training time where I can impress the gaffer and learn relationships.
“I am sure it will come.”
