Clayton Donaldson said the Brentford squad were pleased with their 2-0 win against Oldham Athletic.
The Bees made it 13 npower League One games unbeaten with the win at Boundary Park and climbed to third in the table.
The Bees came in to the game on the back of three draws while Oldham had beaten Championship Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup with Budweiser tie last week.
But Clayton scored twice to give the visitors the points.
“I think it was important to win,” said the striker.
“After the run we have had, it would be easy to get complacent and drop our standards.
“We have been used to winning lately and after three draws it was good to get back to winning ways.
“To come away from home and get three points here is not easy.
“All the boys are pleased with three points.
“It is not an easy place to come, they had a good win against Nottingham Forest last week in the cup.
“That would have given them a little boost and we had to be prepared for that.
“It was an even game until it opened up in the second half.
“We saw the game out perfectly.”
The first goal came when Clayton headed home a Harry Forrester cross inside the first five minutes.
He had already lobbed an effort on to the roof of the net and almost added a second soon after when he headed a corner straight at goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.
“The early goal helped us,” said Clayton.
“If it had not gone it, it would have been a different game.
“Once we got the goal we secured it.
“We were patient and didn’t rush to get another goal.
“They couldn’t break us down, they had shots but didn’t hurt us.
“With Harry on the other wing I know nine times out of ten he will beta his man or cut back and cross.
“We practice that in training.
“We saw each other straight away and I knew where the ball was going.
“I was definitely pleased to score with my first chance.
“I had another one soon after from a corner and headed at the keeper.
“As a forward player you want to take the first opportunity, it gives you confidence.
“I haven’t scored when we have drawn the last few games but I haven’t had a good chance in any of the games.
“I probably wasn’t getting in to the areas as much as I had been before.
“We had a few days off, all the boys are re-energised and that helped.
“I got in to positions to score today.”
Clayton took up his familiar position on the right of midfield but moved to a central role when Marcello Trotta was withdrawn.
Sam Saunders came on and set up Clayton for the second goal.
“I moved up top when Marcello went off,” he said.
“Sam has seen me, free, edge of the box and one-on-one with the keeper.
“I don’t miss too many of those.
“I was happy to hit it early, didn’t give the keeper time to come out, and see it hit the net.
“I got in that position and knew what I wanted to do.
“My instinct took over.
“I slotted it in the corner.
“I was happy.”
The Brentford squad had three and a half days off earlier in the week and Clayton said that made a difference at Boundary Park.
“When we drew those games we weren’t performing to the best of our ability,” he said.
“Our standards dropped.
“We have had so many games in the past few weeks.
“The boys have come back re-energised and, you could see today, we were stronger towards the end.
“They died and we kept going.”
Brentford’s next match is an FA Cup with Budweiser Third Round Replay against Southend United.
The Bees drew 2-2 in Essex in the first tie last week and lost to The Shrimpers in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy earlier this season.
The winners will take on current UEFA Champions League and FA Cup holders Chelsea in the Fourth Round.
“Southend is the next game,” said Clayton.
“I only want to look at that and if we win we can talk about what happens next.
“Southend have a game over us this season, it won’t be easy.
“Hopefully we can put it right.
“The FA Cup is a game everyone wants to play in.
“On Tuesday, the atmosphere will be electric.
“Hopefully we can get one over them, we owe them.”
