Tony Craig said it “doesn’t get any better” than scoring twice in 90 seconds in the dying stages to win a vital match.
Brentford came from 2-1 down to beat Portsmouth at Griffin Park and continue their push from promotion from npower League One.
The Bees had gone ahead but fell behind and trailed going in to the final minutes of the game.
But Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his second of the game to level it up and within two minutes set up Clayton Donaldson for a winning goal that sent Griffin Park in to raptures.
The win kept Brentford third in npower League One with three games to go and nine points will secure promotion.
The first of those three games is against Sheffield United on Tuesday.
“It doesn’t get any better than that, winning the game, scoring two goals with seven minutes to go,” said Tony, speaking to The Bees Player Show after the match.
“It’s a great feeling.
“We will enjoy it today and concentrate tomorrow on Sheffield United.”
Sam Saunders also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He said the number of late goals Brentford have scored this season – 17 in the last ten minutes of matches – showed the belief they had.
He said The Bees were unlucky to be behind but the equaliser set them up for the grandstand finish.
“The amount of late goals we have scored shows the belief we have in the squad,” said Sam.
“We never give up.
“At a point in the second half it seemed flat.
“It was flat on the pitch; it seemed flat in the stands.
“We were getting anxious.
“The crowd expected us to score but we weren’t producing enough.
“I think we were unfortunate to go behind in the game.
“All credit to the boys, Bradley has done what we brought him in for.
“He got a goal and it was a great finish from Clayton at the end.”
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored an early goal to put Brentford one up but Portsmouth equalised when David Connolly curled in from 20 yards and then went ahead when Shaun Cooper scored from even further out.
Portsmouth came to Griffin Park just days after a High Court ruling had enabled the Supporters’ Trust to take control and save them from possible liquidation.
Tony said the Brentford players could tell it was an occasion for Portsmouth and they knew it would be a difficult game.
“You have to give Portsmouth credit, they worked hard from front to back and put us on the back foot,” said the defender.
“Portsmouth have some good players, this is a great three points.
“It was a weird one today.
“When we arrived in Brentford there were Portsmouth fans everywhere and it was a big occasion for them after their day on Wednesday.
“We knew they would be up for it.
“We are a scalp for teams.
“It was a great game to be involved in.”
Sam said the result was all the mattered.
“I thought we started both halves well,” he said.
“We got the goal in the first half and maybe weren’t supporting the strikers so much after that.
“They got a goal, which was a sloppy one from our point of view.
“We went again, came out strong again but they got a decent goal.
“Both their goals were decent finishes.
“All that matters is results.
“We can talk forever about what happened and why but the papers tomorrow will show we got a win and that is all that matters.”
Tony said the equaliser gave The Bees a lift.
“Bradley is a finisher,” he said.
“He scored 20 goals for Charlton [Athletic] in this division last season, as soon as we signed him we knew what we were getting.
“He scored two important goals today and confidence will be sky high.
“We seemed flat before the second goal, it gave us and the fans a lift.
“Two goals in two minutes was great for everyone at Brentford Football Club.”
Sam said Brentford would travel to Sheffield on Tuesday full of confidence having won their last away game against Crewe Alexandra.
Sheffield United are fifth in the table and can also clinch automatic promotion if they end the season strongly.
“It is a massive game,” he said.
“They all are now.
“We know how big it was today and we know how big it will be on Tuesday.
“It is our game in hand and we have to take advantage of that.
“We will go up there confident.
“We won our last away game and hopefully we can do it again.
“We have to start quick, play our normal game and show how good we are.
“Let’s do this.”
Tony said it would be a great game to be involved in.
“We have a cool down tomorrow and concentrate on Sheffield United, after we have enjoyed tonight,” he said.
“It will be a great game to be involved in.
“They are probably the biggest club in this league.
“There will be a lot of fans; I believe we will have a few going.
“As a player you want to play in games like this.
“It will be a great occasion but you can only enjoy it by playing well.
“We have confidence, we have won our last two games but our away form through the season could have been better.
“It will be a good test, one we are relishing and looking forward to.
“They get bigger and bigger and they probably don’t get much bigger than that.”
