There were defeats for both Andreas Bjelland and Romaine Sawyers last night as Denmark and St Kitts and Nevis were involved in international action.
Romaine earned his 19th cap for St Kitts and Nevis’ as their Caribbean Cup qualification hopes took a blow after a 1-0 defeat to French Guiana in Remire-Montjoly. The Bees’ midfielder started as Arnold Abelinti struck the only goal of the game on the hour to take the points. It was the first goal conceded by St Kitts and Nevis in more than ten hours of football and means they must beat Haiti when the two sides meet to have a chance of making top spot. That game was due to be played on Tuesday, however, due to Hurricane Matthew, it has been postponed and will most likely be played in Basseterre next month.
Andreas was an unused substitute as a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick set Poland on their way to a 3-2 2018 World Cup Qualifying win in Warsaw. The Bayern striker struck twice in the first-half and looked like he had settled matters when he netted two minutes in the second-half to complete his hat-trick. However, Denmark hit back instantly through a Kamil Glik own-goal and added a second with 20 minutes to play when Yussuf Poulsen poked home from close range. Despite late pressure The Danes couldn’t find a leveller and head into Tuesday’s home game against Montenegro in fourth place in Group E with three points from two matches.
