Jonathan Douglas said the Brentford players were “delighted” with their first away win of the 2012/13 npower League One season.
The Bees beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park with Clayton Donaldson scoring the only goal.
Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said it was an important win and a deserved one.
He added The Bees could have won by more than a single goal.
“It’s a very important win,” said Jonathan.
“It is our first away win of the season.
“To come to a team like Portsmouth and put on the performance we did was very pleasing and I think it was three points we richly deserved.
“We felt as soon as we took the lead we were comfortable.
“We deserved to take the lead.
“We knew they would come back in to it, they have quality players.
“At the end of the day, we came away with three points.
“They had some possession but we had the better chances and on another day we could have won by two or three.
“We are delighted with three points.”
Jonathan said the win was a team effort and praised the defensive work of striker Clayton Donaldson, who played as a lone striker.
The Bees lined up with Toumani Diagouraga behind Jonathan and Tom Adeyemi in the centre of midfield but were hit by injuries.
Tom Adeyemi limped off with a hamstring injury and Kevin O’Connor, who came on in his place, was taken off on a stretcher in the second half.
“It all starts with Clayton, he was different class for us tonight,” said Jonathan.
“It’s not easy up there on his own.
“It was a good team performance.
“We worked on supporting Clayton, either me or Tom Adeyemi had to get up and press them.
“Tom was doing very well and it was unfortunate he had to go off injured.
“It was a team effort.
“When you lose players to injury you need the quality to come in and replace them.
“We are lucky enough to have that.
“We have a good team spirit and a lot of quality.
“We know if someone goes off there is a man on the bench well capable of coming on and doing just as good.”
More than 1,000 Brentford fans made the trip to Fratton Park and Jonathan paid tribute to them.
“The Brentford fans are different class,” he said.
“It was a cold night and there is a lot of quality football on TV.
“We proved we are in it together.
“The fans are part of the team with the players and the staff.
“With everyone pulling together we can move forward.”
Brentford’s players are taking part in Movember – a campaign where men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male cancer and money to fight it.
Jonathan, who usually sports a beard, said some of his team mates were getting used to facial hair.
“My beard growth is going easier than most,” he said.
“I am used to it.
“It’s getting long but I am going past the itchy bit.
“Some of the lads are trying to adapt.
“It’s for a good cause so hopefully people get behind us.”
