Clayton Donaldson said he knew his winning goal for Brentford against Swindon Town was in from the moment it left his foot.
The Brentford striker scored his ninth goal of the season as The Bees won in Wiltshire last night.
He latched on to a Paul Hayes flick to smash the only goal of the game in from 15 yards.
“The ball fell perfectly,” said Clayton, speaking to Bees Player after the final whistle.
“I didn’t need to break my stride.
“I knew it would run on off the surface and I anticipated that.
“It bounced up right and I could hit it on the volley.
“I was pleased to hit the target, that was my focus.
“As soon as I hit it I knew it was a goal.
“I was waiting for the net to bulge.”
Clayton said Brentford’s 1-0 win against the team that started the evening third in npower League One was well planned.
The Bees held the home side in the first period with a 4-2-3-1 shape and Clayton playing on the right.
He moved up front to partner Paul Hayes early in the second period as Brentford went for the win.
“It all went to plan,” he said.
“We thought we would come here and make it difficult for the first 45 minutes and then have a go if it was still 0-0 in the second half.
“We are delighted.
“This is a tough place to come.
“Swindon are a good team, they are around us in the league.
“We knew it would be tight and 1-0 would probably be the result.
“We are happy it was for us.
“First half we wanted to contain and try and counter.
“In the second half we went to 4-4-2 and wanted to have a go.
“We overpowered them and could have had more.”
Clayton praised the work of Manager Uwe Rösler, who devised a plan to win the game.
The victory meant Brentford had taken seven points in two weeks from away games against Portsmouth, Preston North End and Swindon Town.
“The manager has done his homework and it worked well,” he said.
“We had an extra body around Paul Hayes and I could get the flick, I may not have got it if I was on the wing.
“I was happy to be there.
“Days like this show how good the manager is.
“Tactically it was spot on, as players that’s all you can ask.
“We worked hard on the first half shape and slotted in to the 4-4-2.
“This is a result of the hard work we have done in training.
“Swindon are a quality side and will be up the top at the end of the season.
“We know we are on a tough run of games, we are delighted to take seven points from our last nine away from home.
“Overall we deserved it, we got our tactics right.”
Clayton is currently sporting a beard as the Brentford players take part in the Movember find-raising drive.
Every player in the Brentford squad is growing facial hair to raise awareness of male cancer and money to fight the disease.
“I have never grown a beard before,” said Clayton.
“It’s coming on quite well, I am pleased with mine but there is some banter in the changing room.
“I am thinking about going for a handlebar so there might be a change for Saturday.”
