A young Brentford side, featuring mainly Under-16s, was knocked out of the Jeff Ritson Senior Youth Cup last night away to Hayes & Yeading United.
Brentford were looking to reach the final of the competition, designed for Under-18s teams in Middlesex and North London, for the second-time in three years but fell at the first hurdle against their much older opponents.
Anthony Hayes' side led twice in the first-half through Under-16s Luke Dunn and Danny Parish but went into the break all square.
Hayes & Yeading took the lead for the first time just after the break and wrapped things up in injury time to secure their passage to an away tie with Wealdstone, who beat Brentford in the final two years ago, in the second round.
Despite the disappointment at the defeat Anthony still found positives from the game and from the experience of playing against an older team.
Speaking after the match Anthony said: "There were some positives in the way some of the younger players performed well.
"The main negatives were that we didn’t look after the ball and didn’t really create any real chances in the second-half.
"We conceded some poor goals.
"However it was a good challenge for the boys playing against an Under-18s side with a team that was mainly U-16s.
"The younger boys will have learnt a lot from tonight."
