Paul Hayes said leaving Charlton Athletic and joining Brentford was a move that “felt right”.
The 28-year-old striker joined The Bees from the South London side yesterday and signed a three-year contract at Griffin Park.
Paul said his discussions with Manager Uwe Rösler convinced him Brentford was the place to come and to complete a move that had been long discussed.
He said he had not played as often for Charlton as he would have liked and felt he wanted to go and play football.
“This is a move that has been a long time coming, it’s been discussed since the summer,” said the striker, speaking exclusively to Bees Player.
“It’s been disappointing not to feature as much as I would have liked at Charlton.
“It was a tough decision whether to stay there or kick on and play elsewhere.
“I had to make a decision – I could sit there and hope for a chance or earn the right to play.
“I have missed playing.
“I decided to go and play and Brentford gave me a chance.
“I wanted to make the right move for me and for my family; I didn’t want to make a mistake.
“I spoke to the Manager, I have seen what Brentford want to do and it felt right to come here.
“The Manager has ideas; he knows what he wants to do.
“It’s nice for a player to know what the direction is; the Manager wants to play the way I want to play.”
Paul said the chance to work with Uwe Rösler was a consideration in his decision to come to Brentford.
The striker said he knew Brentford had a decent squad and if consistency could be found, The Bees would challenge at the top of League One.
Paul has already won promotion from the third tier on three occasions and said he wanted to get going, starting with games at home to Yeovil Town tonight and Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
“Uwe is a name in football,” said Paul.
“It’s nice to work with a man with that credibility.
“If he gives you advice you will listen.
“I’m looking forward to working with him.
“I played against Brentford last year and watched when Charlton came here, they were tough games.
“There are good players here.
“The key thing in this division is consistency.
“If we can get our form right there is a chance we can do something.
“I have been promoted three times with three different clubs out of this league.
“It’s a great stat but this is the future.
“We have to approach every game right and have the attitude, desire and determination to perform to your maximum every game.
“To get a draw at Bury was good to get a point on the board.
“If Brentford want to do anything, we need points on the board from these two home games.
“I can’t wait to put the shirt on and show my stuff.”
