Clayton Donaldson said Brentford’s second victory in three days was “a great win”.
The striker scored the winner as Brentford beat Bristol City 2-1 at Ashton Gate last night.
The win came days after The Bees beat Colchester United at Griffin Park, which was on the back of two Sky Bet League One defeats on the bounce.
City started the game strongly but Clayton hailed Brentford’s defending and The Bees scored two late on.
Sam Saunders scored the first and set up the winner for Clayton, a late City reply was mere consolation.
“It is a great win,” said the striker, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“After back-to-back defeats we needed to make up the points.
“We weathered a storm a bit in the first half, showed character, defended well and overpowered them in the second half.
“They are not a bad side, it was a difficult game.
“Three points away from home is pleasing.”
Brentford struggled to get going in the opening stages and Clayton said the home team’s pressing, coupled with a strong wind, made life difficult.
Clayton moved from the right to the centre as Brentford tried to find a foothold in the game.
The striker said The Bees had to weather a storm.
“We didn’t think they could keep up their pressing,” he said.
“We couldn’t get out of our half for 30 minutes; I think the wind had an effect.
“In the second half the wind gave us an advantage.
“They pressured us, pushed men forward and made it difficult.
“We were finding it difficult to get a foot on the ball and dictate play.
“The manager tried to change it and switch it up to try and get a break.
“We were under the cosh.
“They didn’t create that much.
“They had a lot of the ball and put the ball in dangerous areas.
“We defended well, they had more of the ball and we couldn’t dictate play.
“Sometimes you have to weather the storm at places like this.”
The striker said City dropped off a bit after the break and Brentford got more of the ball.
He hailed Sam Saunders, who scored the first with a deflected shot and delivered the corner for Clayton to volley home the second at the far post.
“They weren’t as high tempo in the second half and we got on the ball more,” Clayton explained.
“We gave ourselves a breather and held the ball up front.
“The midfield players got forward.
“There weren’t many chances in the game, Sam has come on, injected a bit of life and his goal set us off.
“There was a great delivery from the corner and I got in to get the second goal.
“We haven’t scored many goals from corners this year; we feel we need to improve on that.
“Normally I go to the front post but Harlee Dean and I switched and I got lucky.”
Clayton’s goal took him to six for the season in 13 Sky Bet League One games.
The win moved Brentford up to seventh in the table, within touching distance of the Play-Offs.
Clayton said Brentford moved up from mid-table to the promotion spots with a fine run of form at this time last season and the players’ aim was to do so again.
“I am happy with the season so far,” he said.
“I have six goals and we are similar in the league to where we were last year.
“Long may that continue.
“Teams at the top are winning.
“Back to back wins is an achievement.
“This time last year we went on a run.
“If we can do that again we will be in a good position at Christmas.”
