Martin Taylor said joining Brentford on loan have him “a great opportunity to come down and play some games at an excellent club”.
The central defender joined The Bees on loan from Sheffield Wednesday yesterday and will stay at Griffin Park initially until October 7
Martin came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers and earned England Under-21 recognition and a League Cup winners’ medal before moving to Birmingham City and then Watford.
The 33-year-old joined Wednesday in August 2012 and played 13 games for the Championship side last season.
He said he was looking forward to playing games and enjoyed his first training session with The Bees yesterday.
“I heard last week there was an opportunity to come here but heard nothing more,” he said.
“Yesterday [Monday], Dave Jones, [Manager] at Sheffield Wednesday, pulled us in and said there was interest and did I want to go down.
“Here I am.
“It was a great opportunity to come down and play some games at an excellent club.
“I am glad to be down here and really looking forward to getting stuck in and playing games.
“Training was great, it was good to get in and train with the boys.
“It’s nice to come in on a Tuesday before the Saturday game, get a few days training and get to know everyone and how we will play.
“I think it went really well.
“I know a few of the lads, it’s good to come in and see faces you know, and there is nothing better than getting out on the pitch and learning about them that way.
“I have three days training before the game on Saturday so I can do that.”
Martin has not played a First Team game this season but has been a regular substitute for Wednesday.
He said he also played games in pre-season and recent friendlies so was ready for Brentford’s Sky Bet League One game against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
He said he had heard good things about the Club and Manager Uwe Rösler and was keen to get going.
“I feel fine,” said Martin, speaking to Bees Player after completing the move.
“It was good to get a good session under my belt today.
“I have had a couple of friendly games and did a full pre-season.
“You want First Team match sharpness but I will get that in the first five minutes on Saturday hopefully.
“I like to get the ball down and play it; I hear that is the way Brentford like to play.
“Hopefully there is more to me than heading and kicking it away but you have to play every game as it is.
“I have been in the game a long time now.
“In some games you have to just get rid of the ball.
“In other games there is an opportunity to pass it.
“You have to choose the right times, that is the trick.
“It was important for me to come to a club that plays football.
“I watched Brentford last season; they were so close to going up and performed really well.
“I know they are a good footballing side and have heard excellent things about the manager so it was a good opportunity to come to a team battling at the top of the league and have a good record.”
Brentford are ninth in League One after taking nine points from their first six games.
Martin said Brentford’s players were still confident despite losing 4-0 to Bradford City on Saturday, a game where they had goalkeeper David Button sent off after 25 minutes.
He said it will be his first taste of third tier football, having played his games in the Premier League and Championship, and he hoped it would be a good experience.
“There is a lot of confidence in the dressing room but you see more on the training pitch,” said Martin.
“The boys still want to get the ball down and play, and that is a big part of it.
“Saturday was a blip and training will be used this week to get the boys raring to go on Saturday.
“I haven’t been to Tranmere before.
“It will be a first for me.
“I haven’t played in the third tier before, this will be the first time for me but hopefully it will be a good experience.”
