Brentford Assistant Manager David Weir said Friday’s win over Gillingham in wet and wild conditions was “very pleasing”.
The Bees made it ten straight home wins in all competitions with a 2-1 victory in front of the Sky TV cameras, a victory that took them to the top of Sky Bet League One.
Jonathan Douglas put them in front from a Jake Bidwell cross and Marcello Trotta made it two from the penalty spot.
Gillingham pulled one back but Brentford got the win, their 14th in their last 16 Sky Bet League One matches, none of which have seen The Bees beaten.
The match was played in heavy rain and the pitch started wet and cut up as the evening wore on.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the win, said it was a good victory.
“It was very pleasing,” he said.
“It was a difficult night with the weather, the conditions and Gillingham making it tough for us.
“It was pleasing to get a good victory.
“We played well.
“The conditions were difficult, as I said, and the boys adapted well.
“We played some good football in spells and could have been two or three up.
“We didn’t get a break in front of goal.
“It was a good performance in a difficult game.”
David said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton encouraged his midfield players and full backs to join the attack.
He said the first goal, with Jake Bidwell crossing and Jonathan Douglas volleying home, showed that policy in action.
“Mark encourages the midfield players to get forward and the full backs to get forward,” said David.
“That was proved tonight.
“Jake put four or five great balls in to the box and it was great to see Dougie get on the end of it in the six-yard box.
“Mark preaches to everyone to attack and join in.
“It is pleasing to see that coming off.
“Alan Judge comes in off the line on the left wing and that opens up the channel.
“Jake can get in positions to hurt teams and he has the quality to put balls in the right areas.
“It is a great asset for us.”
Brentford’s second came from the spot.
Marcello Trotta took a penalty for Brentford for the first time since the last day of the 2012/13 season.
On that occasion, in the last seconds of the season, he hit the crossbar against Doncaster Rovers when a goal would have seen Brentford promoted.
This time, at the same end, he slotted home what proved to be the winning goal.
“Marcello is a big character,” said David.
“There was no doubt as far as we were concerned when the penalty was awarded, his name was on the list.
“He was ready to take it.
“He took it well.
“He did his job.
“It means a lot to him.”
Gillingham pulled one back almost immediately and pressed for a leveller.
Goalkeeper David Button made a few important saves, including a one-on-one inside the last ten minutes.
David said it was good that Brentford had a goalkeeper they could rely on.
“David Button made a couple of saves that were really special,” said the Brentford Assistant Manager.
“He performs week in week out to a high level.
“His last save was an important one at an important time.
“The game was on a knife edge.
“We don’t want to rely on the keeper but we have someone we can rely on when we need him.”
Brentford’s next match is against Bristol City on Tuesday.
David said The Bees wanted to be playing and winning and putting pressure on those around them.
He said the players looked strong as they headed in to the later stages of the season.
“The way the lads are and the confidence they have, we want to be playing,” said David.
“We want points on the board.
“February and March are busy.
“You don’t want to catch up games and need to win them.
“We want teams to be chasing us.
“We just want to keep winning and not look too far ahead.
“The lads keep doing what we ask them.
“They look strong at the end of games.”
