I woke up to beautiful blue skies and the sun beaming through the bedroom window and went to bed in the evening feeling quite old.
In fairness feeling quite old, I suppose, is a plus point in my case as I am old, not quite at all, but most definitely old and it was brought home to me as the day unfolded.
The working day started prior to breakfast with most of the squad and some of the staff going on a 20 plus kilometre bike ride led by cycling devotee and Head of Medical Neil Greig.
Just so that no one got left behind, Goalkeeping Coach Simon Royce brought up the rear only to take his mode of transport (a mountain bike) literally by taking the wrong route and ending up at the top of the tree covered mountain (well, Germanic hill).
Anyway for all the effort he had to put in the return journey was somewhat easier for him than the others as he was able to freewheel his way back down the mountain.
Meanwhile, another group led by Head of Conditioning Chris Haslam went on a thirty minute run through the beautiful countryside.
After breakfast the squad split up into groups to take part in gym loading and injury prevention, a course of exercises etc organised and supervised expertly by the aforementioned Chis Haslam and Neil Greig together with their staff.
These sessions lasted over a period of approximately two hours before there was a chance to take it easy partially before lunch.
After lunch there was time to relax whilst those who required a massage from our masseur Sladey - Chris Domoney, so-called because of his uncanny resemblance to Russell Slade - did so in the treatment room.
Meanwhile Uwe and the Coaches watched a DVD of a potential signing followed by individual meetings with the defensive players.
At 4.30pm it was time for the coaches and back up staff to make our way over to the training pitches within this magnificent sports complex and prepare and set up ready for the session starting at 5pm.
It transpired it was probably the hottest time of the day but a very good two hour session ensued ending up with a short game.
Then following an ice bath (no not me, don't be silly, I had an option and took it), it was back for a shower and dinner.
No singing tonight although Will Grigg must feel it’s like the Sword of Damocles hanging over him as he knows what's expected of him and when he hears the fateful tap of the spoon on glass (and no that's not a colloquialism for something else) he will know it’s that time to entertain.
After dinner it's time to relax for the players in their rooms and the hardworking coaches, conditioning and medical staff to unwind in the lounge.
I can't speak highly enough of the Club's back up staff here who put in a real shift day after day and can respond at a moment’s notice to the needs of the players who themselves are totally dedicated to preparing themselves in the correct manner for the challenge of ten months football that lays ahead.
When you see first hand, as I have, how this Club has progressed in every conceivable aspect over the past few seasons, you will understand why I am more excited about the forthcoming season re our immediate and longer term prospects, than I have been in all of the 59 years I have been a Bees fan (sorry I was a late developer and didn't watch Brentford until I was seven).
It was whilst relaxing in the lounge, after Uwe and the coaches had watched another match DVD, that I, together with others I should add, became aware of our ages.
There had been a conversation during the day between some of the staff and some of the players (the names are being withheld to protect those implicated) regarding Glastonbury and the Rolling Stones, and one of the players wasn't aware who Mick Jagger was (for those of you who may not know either he's the lead singer of The Rolling Stones and has been since the same year that Brentford won the Fourth Division Championship back in 1963).
Further questioning led to someone else being asked to name The Beatles, to which came the reply from one "we'll I know one of them was called Rango" and someone else pitched in "and Paul McCartney".
That's not a criticism of the players concerned, just the realisation that what may be taken as read by some is not such common knowledge to others (re-runs of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire are testament to that)?
I should add in response that I probably couldn't name any rappers, the majority of current pop artistes and as for grime acts; well I don't even know what they do even if I knew who they were!
It was also pointed out that, on having his feet attended to, one of the players put forward the question: what's the point of toes?
It was at that point I knew it was time for bed and especially so when Sladey the Masseur ("good touch for a big man") defaulted back to his favourite pastime of listing famous football cliches.
So "at the end of the day", I felt "it wasn't too soon for us to go up", and "for those who thought it was all over, it was now".
And so I went to bed.
