George Saville said he thought Brentford produced a good performance in their 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Millwall.
The Bees scored three second half goals to take the win over the Championship side.
George played a key role in the win and had a hand in the attacking play that resulted in goals for Sam Saunders, Paul Hayes and Stuart Dallas.
Speaking to The Bees Player Show after the match, he said he enjoyed being involved.
“I thought it was a good performance from the team,” the young midfield player, on loan from Chelsea, said after the match.
“Games like this are about getting ready for the start of the season, getting your fitness back and passing the ball.
“I enjoy getting on the ball.
“I like to get forward and support the play.
“This side suits me as we play like that.
“We all had to show competitiveness and physicality today.
“You need to have a physical side in League One; there are two sides of the game.
“The game opened up nicely in the second half for us.
“I was pleased to get an assist.”
Paul Hayes also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He scored the second when he picked up a cross from Martin Fillo and smashed home.
“Martin did ever so well,” he said.
“He came to Germany with us for the training camp and has settled in well despite not knowing the lads or how we play.
“That can be hard for foreign players but he earned his year loan.
“His endeavour got him down the line; I anticipated where it would be, took a touch and put it in the back of the net.
“You have to anticipate the cross, get in front of the defender and take the chance.”
Paul said he missed pre-season training last year, joining The Bees from Charlton Athletic in August, and had to play catch-up but is now in top shape ahead of the new season.
He was part of the Brentford squad that finished third in League One and lost the Play-Off Final, narrowly missing out on promotion.
Paul said the players wanted to earn promotion this season and have come back ready to do it.
“This time last year I came in and missed pre-season,” said.
“I had to catch up.
“I have tried to come back in my best shape and keep up with the younger lads.
“The more games I feel the fitter I feel.
“You could see the difference in fitness between us and Millwall tonight.
“We have raised the bar and have come back in good shape.
“I believe you can only get better.
“We were so close last season and were very disappointed.
“We have come back knowing there is one job, to get promoted.
“We all want it and can’t dwell on what happened last year.
“The Club is going in the right direction and we have to do it on the pitch.”
George has joined the squad this year, arriving on loan from Chelsea.
He said he wanted to help Brentford achieve the aim of promotion.
“My personal target is to get games and experience,” he said.
“The manager has shown he give young players chances.
“I want to help the team push and go a step better than last year.
“The lads are great.
“It’s a young squad with a few experienced heads.”
Paul pointed to the arrival of George plus the signing of Will Grigg from Walsall and Alan McCormack from Swindon Town as signs of what Brentford wanted to achieve.
“The gaffer has done well in keeping the squad and has added quality players,” said the striker.
“That shows the direction we want to go in.
“Will scored 19 goals last season, McCormack had a great season last season, George Saville is great on the ball.
“The young kids are willing to learn and aren’t out of their depth.
“The squad is looking sharp.
“Everyone wants to be successful.
“It is great to be at an ambitious club.
“We have to do the business.”
