The FLT Futsal South East League entered the second half of the season at SportHouse Barking yesterday with Brentford and Southampton leaving East London with a win a-piece after the two sides clashed in both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams.
Southampton, who have one of the strongest Futsal schemes in the country including a team that competes in The FA Futsal National League, were determined to repeat their win over Brentford from earlier in the season.
The Bees started well, moving the ball at a high tempo and exploiting the space of the international size court. Brentford pressed home their good start when skipper Louis Dailey unleashed an unstoppable shot 15 metres out that flew into the bottom left corner.
Brad Scott was then dismissed for an off the ball incident leaving The Bees with only four men for the two minute power-play. The team survived the power-play thanks to some great defending and then, with the full complement of five outfield players restored, made it 2-0 as Harman Sandhu finished off a fine counter-attack. Alfie Hipwell and Mason Roseboom then both scored in quick succession to send The Bees in 4-0 up at the break.
Southampton pulled one back at the start of the second-half but Brentford re-established their four goal advantage from a quick kick-in. Saints pulled back a goal making it 5-2 with four minutes to go but the Futsal Bees were defending resolutely and with great organisation to frustrate their opponents. A consolation goal for Southampton 90 seconds from the end could not break Brentford who ended up 5-3 winners.
There was less positive news for the ‘B’ team who were beaten 5-1 by The Saints in their match despite going in level at the break as Frankie Finn cancelled out an early goal for the South Coast side. Once Southampton went back in front four minutes after the break they took control and netted three more to make it an afternoon to forget for the ‘B’ team.
