Goalkeeper David Button admitted the weeks since he was sent off in the Sky Bet League One defeat against Bradford City had been a frustrating time.
The stopper was sent off on September 7 in a game that Brentford eventually lost 4-0.
He was given a three-game suspension for serious foul play and missed recent games against Tranmere Rovers, Leyton Orient and Coventry City.
The red card came when a long ball from the back released Nahki Wells in behind in the inside right channel and David came flying out, got some of the ball and some of the striker on the edge of the penalty area.
Assistant Referee Nicholas Gibbons signalled a foul had been committed and Referee Andy Haines, following another discussion with his assistant, sent David off.
The goalkeeper made his competitive comeback in an Under-21 Professional Development League two South game for the Development Squad against Charlton Athletic yesterday.
David, speaking after the match, said: “The last few weeks have felt long.
“It has been frustrating.
“I have been supporting the team and I am chomping at the bit to get back.
“Looking back it did look bad.
“At the time, I knew there was no intention and I won the ball so I felt it was harsh.
“Looking back, it was a bit rash.”
The sending off came after he had kept clean sheets against Walsall and Carlisle United in successive League One matches.
David said he now had to respond to the setback.
“It was frustrating, I had kept two clean sheets in the league and that game had started well,” he said.
“I would have liked to have kept that momentum going.
“But these things happen in football, there will be setbacks.
“It is how you respond.”
Brentford beat Charlton 4-2 yesterday and David, speaking to Bees Player, said a match provided different tests to training.
“I think I needed the game,” he said.
“I have been training every day and working hard in the gym and on the pitch but game play has different tests.
“It was nice to get a run out.
“Training is good, to improve technique and keep you sharp but you get different decisions to make in games.
“They test you in different ways.”
Brentford were 2-0 up at half time against the South London side and then took a 4-1 lead after Charlton pulled one back.
The visitors finished strongly but Brentford won 4-2.
David had to make a few saves during the course of the 90 minutes to ensure Brentford won.
“I thought the lads did well,” he said.
“The quality wasn’t always the highest but we played some good football at times.
“I had a few bits to do, which is nice.
“It gets you back in to the rhythm.”
Richard Lee returned after a shoulder injury to play in the three First Team matches David missed while Jack Bonham had also featured this season and Liam O’Brien had played in Development Squad fixtures.
Brentford beat Coventry City 2-0 in their last League One match on Sunday and David said he had to impress Manager Uwe Rösler to get his place back.
“I knew what Richard was about before I came in,” said David.
“Jack and Liam are also pushing and doing well.
“It won’t be easy but I think I have been training well and hopefully I can impress the gaffer and get back in as soon as I can.
“I am sure the manager won’t have an easy decision.
“I have to keep working hard and whether I am picked or not I will be supporting the team.”
