Flemming Pedersen doesn’t think a team can ever be the finished article as Brentford’s Development Squad continue to look for their first win of 2016. The Head Coach was speaking after Andy Gogia’s goal had secured a point for The Bees following a 2-2 draw at home against Crystal Palace. Scott Hogan, making his return from injury scored the first before The Eagles struck in quick succession midway through the half to lead 2-1. However Gogia converted from close range late on to secure a deserved share of the points.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Flemming said that he will always be looking to tweak his team. “This team will never be the finished article,” said Flemming. “When you get a new player in, or a new type of player then you always adjust the small details. Sometimes I compare building a style of play or building a team to being a painter. A painter doesn’t just paint a picture, it is a long time working. He will paint again and again and then he finishes. You will never finish building a style of play or building a team but the process is like the painter.”
The Bees went into the match on the back of a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bristol City last time out but Flemming felt there was no comparison between last Monday’s performance in the South West and The Bees display at Griffin Park and believes there is still more to come.
“You almost can’t compare this performance to last week’s,” said Flemming. “It was similar to the second-half last week but Bristol were 3-0 up then and maybe they took it a little easy. Today Crystal Palace didn’t take it easy. They struggled a lot and we tried to penetrate the half spaces or inside pockets but we missed the last passes in behind and the last runs in behind. However in four to six weeks we will have reached that too.”
Brentford’s first goal came at the end of a sweeping counter-attack move that started with Josh Clarke and ended with Scott Hogan finding the net on his return after 18 months out with a knee injury. Flemming revealed that The Bees had been doing a lot of work on their counter-attacking style and the experienced coach feels that they are starting to get the rewards for the work.
“The first goal was a good goal,” said Flemming. “First of all you had Andy Gogia with his pressure in our own half. I want all the lads to work together when we press. We won the ball and started a counter-attack. We played it wide and then in and that was very close to perfect. We have trained a certain way in our counter-attacks and the boys are remembering much better and they can do it now.”
