The goal Wolverhampton Wanderers scored at the end of the first half was the key to them beating Brentford on Saturday, according to Bees’ Assistant Manager David Weir.
The Bees were beaten 3-0 at Griffin Park in the top-of-the-table clash.
Brentford started the day at the top of League One but fell behind when a ball from James Henry that looked like a cross curled in to the top corner.
Wolves, who started the day in third and had leapfrogged The Bees by full time, made the game safe in the second half, scoring on the counter attack and then from long range with time running down.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the game, said he did not feel there was a lot between the sides but that Wolves were the best team Brentford had played.
He said the opening goal was fortunate but changed the dynamic of the game and Wolves took their opportunities.
“You have to give Wolves credit, they are the best team we have played and they have some talented individuals,” said David.
“They capitalised on the chances they got, they scored and we didn’t.
“I don’t think there was a great deal between the teams.
“Their goal just before half time was a bit fortunate and that changed the game.
“We came out second half and played well, we were on top and got hit on the break.
“It was a tight game that could have gone either way.
“There weren’t many chances, although they probably had the better chances if we are being really honest, but there was nothing clear cut.
“It was a fine line, the goal was fortunate and that changed the dynamic of the game.
“The lads responded well, they tried to do the right things.”
David said the message at half time, with Brentford a goal down, was to continue to do what they were doing.
He said he felt the game was even and little needed to change.
David said Wolves sat in and defended their lead well and Brentford had to learn from the loss, which ended a 19 game unbeaten Sky Bet League One run.
“We told the players to believe in what they were doing,” said David.
“The game was even and we had to keep doing the right things.
“I think the players did that and we were on top.
“The game opened up but they sat in, they are a good team and we didn’t create many chances.
“They defended well and made it difficult for us.
“We had a couple of shots from distance that were close but unfortunately for us it didn’t go in today.
“We could have had a penalty but it wasn’t our day.
“It didn’t fall for us.
“We will keep doing the things we believe in and the things that have served us well.
“We will take this on the chin, learn from it and get better.
“There was 100 per cent application and effort.
“Some days it is not your day and you move on.
“We have had a fantastic run, it is a disappointing night but we will come back and start again.”
David said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton and he were in constant discussion through the second half about whether to make any substitutions.
He explained they felt Brentford were on top and didn’t want to change things.
He added Will Grigg was ready to come on when Wolves got their third goal.
“There wasn’t a lot going wrong,” said David.
“There wasn’t a lot we could have changed.
“We were talking about making substitutions all the way through the second half, whether we should change anything.
“We felt we were on top and didn’t want to affect that.
“We had Will ready and they scored their third.
“We were doing the right things and knocking on the door.
“There wasn’t a lot that needed changing.”
David said Brentford had to use the disappointment they felt in losing to Wolves and use it positively.
He said all the targets set by the players and management were still attainable.
“We should never be happy losing,” he said.
“It is a long time since the Club has felt this disappointment.
“It was a big game and one we wanted to do well in.
“There is a long way to go.
“We have to use this disappointment positively, think about what we could have done better individually and as a team.
“We have to use this disappointment to spur us on to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
“We set ourselves targets and that is still attainable for us.
“It is important we are in that position.”
