Farid El Alagui said he was happy to score Brentford’s equalising goal against Gillingham in front of more than 1,000 travelling supporters.
The striker fired home four minutes in to stoppage time to give The Bees a point on their trip to Kent.
Brentford trailed to a first half goal when Adam Forshaw lined up a free kick around 30 yards from goal with seconds left.
“It was a free kick from Adam,” Farid explained.
“He made a good choice to try and find Harlee Dean.
“I was surprised, I thought he would try and hit it.
“I tried to find a position in the box, Harlee did very well to head it back and I was in a good position.
“I tried to hit the net.
“The main thing is to hit the target.
“The ball dropped and I had no choice, I had to hit it how I could.
“A late goal is always good for a striker and it was great for the fans that travelled.
“They gave us great support; I was happy for them and happy for the team.
“It is always good to make their day a bit better with a last minute goal.”
Farid said the 1-1 score line would prove to be a good one if Brentford continued to win their home games.
The striker started on the substitute’s bench but said he felt Brentford were in control when Gillingham went ahead late in the first period.
He hailed the way The Bees never gave up and found a way to take something from the game.
“When you come back in a game like this, you have to take the point,” said Farid.
“I was disappointed because I thought we were in control and conceded a goal at the worst moment.
“We did well to never give up.
“It is a good point away from home and if we win at home and draw away through the season we will take it.”
Farid said Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler had warned his players they would face a battle against The Gills and that is what they got.
The striker said it reminded him of playing for Falkirk in the second tier of Scottish football and Brentford largely rose to the challenge, except when the home side scored.
“The game reminded me of playing in Scotland,” he said.
“I love this type of game, it is a big challenge.
“It is hard to get in to the game but I used to like them.
“You have to deal with the game first.
“The gaffer told us there would be long balls and a battle, we had to be ready.
“We challenged well and only the goal was disappointing.
“We got a point and to turn it in to a good draw we had to win at home.”
During the 2012/13 season Brentford scored umpteen late goals to earn points and Farid said the 2013/14 team had shown they had to same ability.
He said the way The Bees fight to the end in games would serve them well.
“We showed this fighting spirit from last year and we kept it,” said the striker.
“The team today had players from last year.
“The new players come in and have it as well.
“It suits us to fight until the end.
“That will help us at the end of the season.”
