Betinho’s first goal in Brentford colours gave Jon De Souza’s side a 1-1 draw on Monday against Sheffield Wednesday although that was the least that the Development Squad manager thought his side deserved.
Having dominated most of the opening hour Jon’s side fell behind when Matt Penney unleashed an unstoppable effort from 30 yards with just over 20 minutes to go.
The Bees weren’t behind for long however as Betinho popped up to control Montell Moore’s cross, turn and fire past Joe Wildsmith to level things up.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Jon felt his side had done more than enough to secure all three points and it would have been a travesty if they had come away with nothing.
“I don’t think the result was a fair reflection,” said Jon.
“I thought we were the better team in the first-half and in the second-half.
“I felt we dominated the game in terms of possession, territory and final third entries.
“I said to them at half-time and said that we needed to turn that domination into goals.
“Unfortunately we didn’t and we found ourselves 1-0 down but it was fair play to the character of the lads to get one back but I felt we should have won the game.
“It was vital to get that goal when we did because I thought we deserved to win it and we certainly didn’t deserve to lose it.
“It was vital that the boys got together and got something out of the game.
“We have been poor in the last few weeks.
“I thought we were poor last week.
“Being 2-0 up you have got to win the game of football.
“I wouldn’t say I was pleased today because we haven’t won the game.
“For us we really need to win games and dominate games but as we always say to the players you can’t control the result but certainly with the performance I thought we were the better team.”
Jon’s side dominated territory and possession but Wildsmith in the Wednesday goal was not overly extended.
Betinho hit a post in the first-half but other than that chance and the goal Wednesday’s goal never really came under sustained threat.
Jon thought that could have been down to a lack of patience on the part of some of his players.
The Development Squad manager believed his players might have been better suited looking to create one clear cut chance rather than a number of half-chances.
“I think we needed to be a bit more patient especially in the last ten minutes of the game,” said Jon.
“I felt at times we forced it a little bit too much.
“Rather than force it for the last ten minutes to get a half-chance why not keep it and be patient to create a real clear-cut chance.
“Sometimes a couple of the players played off too many touches but we do like the players to go at people.
“I do think at times we didn’t move the ball quick enough and didn’t trust other people with the ball but, especially with people like Montell Moore, we do encourage them to go and run at people.”
Monday’s starting XI for the game against Sheffield Wednesday included two youth team players and three first team players.
With the first-team not getting back from Middlesbrough until the late hours of Saturday night Jon was without the three members of the first-team for shape training before the match on Sunday.
Added to that fact Brentford have rarely played The Owls before at any level meaning preparation was difficult for Monday’s match admitted Jon.
“Preparation is always hard because we don’t always do team shape,” said Jon.
“Yesterday for example some of the first-team boys who played weren’t in because they had such a late day at Middlesbrough.
“Although we do look at opposition it is always hard to tell because first-team players being in or out could affect the team.
“We would prepare for Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United the same as we would for QPR.
“We have a rough idea what they do and we will look at their DVDs but in truth it is all about what we do in terms of imposing our philosophy on football games.
“It is difficult not knowing who might be involved but it is part of the role and I am sure it is the same everywhere.
“All I want is that the players who go on the pitch work hard, look after the football and try and be bright and creative in possession.
“I accept that our shape isn’t always going to be right and that tactically we are going to get things wrong but the big thing for me is that everybody in there, individually, is looking for different things.
“Today you had Tony Craig who is fighting for minutes and is trying to keep himself match fit and Nik Tzanev and Bradley Clayton who are fighting to earn pro contracts.
“It is all about those individuals in the team doing those individual jobs and not worrying too much about their teammates.”
Next up for Jon’s side is a trip to Yorkshire to face Sheffield United next Monday.
Sheffield United are still searching for their first league win of the season after racking up four draws in their opening six games of the season.
With The Blades First-Team without a midweek game Jon thinks it will be a very tough test against an experienced side.
“Next week will be a tough test because Sheffield United haven’t got a midweek game,” said Jon.
“We play Watford so I imagine I will be bringing quite a young squad up to an experienced Sheffield United side.
“Hopefully the boys will take on board what they have learnt in the last couple of weeks.
“We are looking to go up to Sheffield United and build on the point.”
