Adam Forshaw said Brentford deserved their Boxing Day win over Colchester United.
The Bees picked up their fifth straight npower League One victory in Essex and Adam scored the second in a 3-1 success.
The Bees were 2-0 up inside the first 15 minutes and Colchester defender Josh Thompson had been sent off for denying Clayton Donaldson a clear goal scoring opportunity.
But Colchester responded, pulled a goal back and Brentford had Tom Adeyemi sent off.
Adam said Brentford were a bit sloppy after taking a two-goal lead but got the job done and added Colchester to a recent list of scalps that includes promotion-chasers Swindon Town, Sheffield United, Milton Keynes Dons and Notts County.
“We knew we could play against, and beat, all the best teams,” said Adam.
“These are the sorts of games that you may have to play ugly at times and you to have make it count.
“We deserved the three points.
“After I scored the second goal, I think we got a bit sloppy.
“Perhaps we thought it would be a breeze.
“In the end we got the job done.
“We started to take our foot off the gas, that happens.
“They got the crowd behind them and then the goal.
“We had little scares before half time.
“At half time, the Manager [Uwe Rösler] told us to keep on it and see the game out.”
Brentford had control in the second half as the rain lashed down, the wind picked up and the pitch got harder to play on.
Goalkeeper Richard Lee barely had a save to make and Harlee Dean scored a third to seal the win.
“The game died after half time,” said Adam.
“I don’t think the conditions helped.
“Richard had nothing to do and the back four were solid as ever.
“The games was sloppy, the conditions made it hard to play killer passes and get the ball down.
“Sometimes it is like that.
“We came here for three points and even though the performance might not have been as good as we can do, the main thing was the three points.”
Adam said he did not think Tom Adeyemi should have been sent off but referee Gavin Ward made the right decision to dismiss Colchester defender Josh Thompson for denying Clayton Donaldson a goal scoring opportunity.
“Clayton showed a lot of pace, I think he would have scored if he had gone on,” said Adam.
“I thought the referee was a bit card happy.
“I thought their sending off was right but Tom’s were just fouls.
“The weather can make them look worse than they were.
“He made two miss-timed tackles, they weren’t malicious.”
Adam punished Colchester for the foul on Donaldson by curling the free kick in to the top corner from 20 yards after a discussion with Harry Forrester.
“We have a few who can take it,” said Adam.
“I said to Harry that I’d take it and he could take others if I didn’t get it right.
“I thought we’d get more throughout the game.
“We didn’t get another one.
“Luckily enough it went it.”
Brentford sit third in npower League One having played 23 games and the two teams above them – Sheffield United and Tranmere Rovers – have played a game more.
The bees head to Shropshire on Saturday to play Shrewsbury Town in their final game of 2012.
“This result keeps us going and hopefully we can start to create a bit of a gap,” said Adam.
“We will worry about ourselves.
“The aim is to keep winning, it’s not easy.
“We have Shrewsbury next.
“It’s winnable but we know what this league is like.
“We are reaching for the stars.
“We all have real belief we can do something.
“We will just take it game by game.”
