Brentford Assistant Manager David Weir said The Bees got stronger as their Sky Bet League One match against Coventry City wore on.
The Bees beat Coventry 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
They fell behind early on and Alan Judge saw a penalty saved inside the first 15 minutes.
But Clayton Donaldson and Marcello Trotta scored within three minutes to give Brentford a half time lead.
Alan McCormack added a third just after the break and Brentford could have had more in the second half.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the win, said Coventry came to attack and that meant the game was open.
He said The Bees knew Coventry would pose a test but by the hour mark Brentford had “worked it out”.
“It was a very open game,” said David.
“Credit to Coventry for coming here and trying to score goals, we have seen some games where that has not been the case.
“They had a go and it was end-to-end in the first half, probably a bit too much for us as coaches.
“But it was an exciting game to watch.
“They have good players, it is not that long ago that they were in The Championship and they still have players from that era.
“It was always going to be a tough game.
”Our lads worked it out and by the hour mark we looked like we would score goals and put a real gap between the teams.
“As the game wore on we got stronger.”
David admitted Brentford may have been a bit fortunate to be ahead at half time.
But he added The Bees had players that could create something and that gave them an advantage.
“We have Clayton, Marcello, Alan Judge, players who can score out of nothing,” said David.
“We didn’t start well and were probably fortunate to be 2-1 up but we have players that can make things happen.
“That can be the difference sometimes.
“There were a number of good performances and it came when we were 1-0 down and questions were being asked.”
Brentford made a change at half time, withdrawing George Saville and bringing on Nico Yennaris.
Alan McCormack moved in to midfield and scored within 150 seconds.
Brentford cleared a corner, Jake Reeves and Marcello Trotta headed on and Alan McCormack raced clear to score.
David said Brentford were further up the pitch after the break and getting a goal early in the second half was a boost.
“George Saville felt a bit tight,” he said.
“We didn’t want to take a risk with him at this stage of the season.
“We are fortunate to have options.
“Nico came on, Alan went in to midfield and both did really well.
“They added energy and the ingredients we were lacking in the first half.
“Goals can change games.
“The third goal came at a great time for us.
“We leave players up at corners for a reason, they tested us by playing short but getting a goal from that shows the manager’s reasons for doing it.
“We were further up the pitch in the second half.
“We were more compact.”
Brentford are second in Sky Bet League One, a point behind leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers with a game in hand and four points ahead of Leyton Orient, who are third and have played two games more.
David said Brentford were taking one game at a time, starting with a trip to Rotherham United, who are fourth in the table, on Tuesday.
“We can’t get ahead of ourselves,” he said.
“We have ten games left and we need to perform.
“The lads have reached the total from last season, which is a great achievement.
“They have worked hard to get in to this position, they have to grasp it.
“Every game is a test.
“We look at the next game.
“Rotherham won again today and that will be a difficult game.
“We have to go there and put in a performance.
“There is a lot of football to be played.”
