DAVID WEIR 'CAN'T BE TOO DISAPPOINTED'

Brentford Assistant Manager David Weir said The Bees “can’t be too disappointed” with their 1-1 draw away to Shrewsbury Town.

The Bees took the lead on a horrible day in Shropshire when Marcello Trotta followed up after his penalty was saved to tap in.

But Shrewsbury equalised in the last minute, Tom Eaves smashing home from the edge of the penalty area.

The match was played on a heavy pitch with a strong wind blowing from one end to the other, in to the faces of Brentford in the first half.

Rain fell throughout the match, meaning the pitch cut up and conditions got worse as the afternoon wore on.

David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said with Shrewsbury in the relegation zone and with a Caretaker Manager, it was a difficult afternoon.

He said The Bees did everything right on the afternoon so couldn’t be too upset that they didn’t win the match.

“It was very difficult conditions,” said David.

“The wind was howling, there was rain, a very bobbly pitch.

“It was a difficult situation to come in to, against a manager and a team scrapping for their lives.

“I thought we controlled the game, had the majority of the ball and majority of the chances.

“We got in front and were looking strong.

“But when you are only one goal in front, it is difficult to score a goal and be creative.

“There is an element of chance in the game.

“It was a difficult day.

“When you are up, you are disappointed if you don’t win, but I think we did everything right, everything within our control we did well.

“We can’t be too disappointed.”

David said Brentford tried to play the ball on the floor through midfield  but had to mix it up occasionally, which did not suit them.

The Brentford Assistant Manager said The Bees stuck to their task well.

“We passed it short for the majority of the game,” said David.

“The boys at the back got on the ball all the time.

“We all played, tried to play through midfield.

“It was difficult so we had to mix it up to a certain degree.

“That’s not our style.

“The lads stuck to their task.

“We did everything we wanted to do.

“We tried to play in the righty manner, score in the right manner and the work rate can never be questioned.”

New right back Nico Yennaris made his Brentford debut at Shrewsbury but had to come off early in the second half with a dead leg.

Adam Forshaw, on his return from injury, came on to replace him and David said he had an impact when he came on.

Harlee Dean also returned from injury and played 90 minutes.

David said it was good to have them both back.

“Nico Yennaris acquitted himself well,” he said.

“He had a dead leg, it tightened up at half time, as it often does and it wouldn’t loosen up at the start of the second half.

“He had to come off.

“We have to manage Adam properly and get him back in to the team.

“We know how important he is.

“He had an impact when he came on.

“It was great to have him back and great that Harlee Dean played 90 minutes.

“It is great to have those two back.

“If we can get Sam Saunders back we will have a fully fit squad, that is where we want to be.”

Brentford took the lead when a penalty was awarded after Alan Judge was fouled by Ryan Woods.

Marcello Trotta fired it low but Chris Weale turned it on to the post, it rolled across the line and the striker got their first to tap it in.

Adam Forshaw, who has taken four penalties for The Bees this season, was on the pitch but David said everyone knew who was taking the spot kick.

“We were clear before the game who was supposed to take the penalty,” said David.

“There was no miscommunication.

“The players make the decisions on the pitch.

“If they see something they are professionals and can take the call.

“Marcello was on his toes, like all good strikers.

“He got his tap in and it was nice to see it go in.”

Shrewsbury equalised when Tony Craig’s attempted headed clearance hit Tom Eaves.

The striker reacted quickest to smash home.

“Conditions played a part,” said David.

“Tony was under a really difficult ball to deal with.

“He tried to make the best of it.

“The ball fell to their lad and he hit a fantastic strike, fair play to him for that.

“When you are only 1-0 up that can happen, that is why we were keen to get the second goal.”

The draw extended Brentford’s unbeaten Sky Bet League One run to 18 games.

The Bees have won 15 of those and are top of League One.

David said Brentford wanted to win every game but can’t be despondent with an away draw and will look to go again when they face Crawley Town at Griffin Park next Saturday, February 8.

“We are top of the league and our run is still going,” he said.

“We want to win every game and Mark is clear about that.

“He feels we can win every game.

“It wasn’t a win so we aren’t entirely happy but we can’t be too despondent with that.

“We will go again next week.”
