David Button said Brentford’s players are well aware there is room for improvement after beating Oldham Athletic at Griffin Park yesterday.
The Bees probably had slightly the better of an even game but had to wait until stoppage time to score the winner.
Jonathan Douglas got it when he head home a Sam Saunders cross at the far post.
David, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford had to be pleased to have won but knew they had to play better.
The win was Brentford’s eighth in nine Sky Bet League One games.
“It is a results business, we have come away with three points, we have to be pleased,” said the goalkeeper.
“But we are not naïve; it was not a perfect performance.
“We know there is room for improvement.
“But it is the sign of a good team when you don’t play your best and get the three points.
“We will learn, move on and be better in the future.”
David was not forced in to too many saves in keeping his seventh clean sheet in eight games.
Oldham got numbers forward quickly when they broke but failed to take advantage.
The closest they came was when a Jonathan Grounds header was cleared off the line by Alan McCormack while Mike Petrasso also had a volley blocked.
“We were a bit open at times,” said David.
“That is something we will look at.
“But that will happen because of the way we play.
“We have a great defence, with Jonathan Douglas sitting in and everyone pressing from the front.
“Teams aren’t going to cause us too many problems.
“I wasn’t too busy today, which is always good.”
David admitted a late goal was special but said no-one would be getting carried away.
He added Brentford’s players knew they had the quality to create chances and the fitness to carry on until the end.
He said Mark Warburton, the new Brentford Manager, would work on things that needed improving and The Bees would be better next week.
“A last minute winner does feel a bit more special,” he said.
“When you have to work that hard for a victory, and it comes late on, it is a bit sweeter.
“The performance wasn’t great so we won’t get carried away.
“Warbs will get in to us about the little things he wants us to improve and we will kick on next week.
“We know we will always get chances because of the players we have got.
“It is about taking them.
“We left it late today, but we did.
“It is credit to the support staff, who are very influential, that we can keep going in that way.”
David admitted there had been change at the Club in the past week, but said it had not been a massive one.
Hours before an FA Cup with Budweiser Second Round tie at Carlisle United last Saturday, December 7, Uwe Rösler left his position as Brentford Manager to take up the same role at Wigan Athletic.
Mark Warburton, formerly Sporting Director, was named as Brentford boss a few days later.
“It has been a bit of a change, losing Uwe,” said David.
“Warbs has come in and put his authority down straight away.
“He has been here, he knows the players.
“From that respect not too much has changed.
“He is trying to implement his own style but it’s not too different from the previous manager.
“We know there will be a few tweaks.
“It has been good, we have a great week of training behind us and everyone is enjoying it.
“Managerial changes are part and parcel of being a footballer; it is something you have to deal with.
“I am sure most of the players would have experienced something like that before.”
David said Mark Warburton had the same philosophy as Club Owner Matthew Benham and was passing that on.
He added Brentford had a good enough squad to achieve their aims of promotion.
The win over Oldham leaves Brentford third in Sky Bet League One, four points off the top.
“Warbs is always about the place,” said David.
“He knows all the players.
“He has the same philosophy that comes own from the owner of attacking football.
“We have the players and it is all about keeping our run in the league going.”
David said it was important everyone at the Club pulled in the right directions.
He praised the Brentford fans for their support against Oldham and called on them to continue that for the rest of the season.
“We need the supporters with us,” said David.
“Things happen at football clubs and we need the fans to get behind us.
“They did today.
“The atmosphere was good, especially in the second half.
“It does give you a lift to get over the line.
“If everyone at the Club pushes in the same direction, it can only go well for us.”
