Brentford Assistant Manager David Weir said The Bees should have been able to deal with having a disputed penalty awarded against them at Milton Keynes Dons on Monday and gone on to win the game.
Brentford had a 2-0 lead and control of the game in Buckinghamshire when referee Tim Robinson awarded the home side a penalty.
The official judged David Button had fouled Izale McLeod, a decision David disputed, although he admitted Tony Craig may have committed a foul earlier in the move.
MK and then earned a draw with a stoppage time equaliser.
Brentford had gone 2-0 thanks to goals from James Tarkowski, who scored at the end of the first half when MK goalkeeper David Martin dropped a corner, and Clayton Donaldson.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said it was a game Brentford should have won.
He said The Bees had to respond when things went against them and would look to get back to winning ways against Colchester United on Saturday.
“Tony’s might have been a penalty,” said David.
“He gave it against David Button, I think David got the ball.
“We should still deal with that.
“These things happen in a game and there were 15 minutes to go.
“We wanted to see the game out and try to score again.
“James capitalised on a mistake and it was nice to see that go in.
“I thought we controlled the game and dominated possession, which isn’t easy.
“On the day there were lots of positives but it was disappointing to lose goals so near the end and not win a game we should have won.
“You have to respond when things happen, you have to react.
“We took a step back rather than forwards.
“That is a lesson to learn.
“Their second goal was a good goal, a good delivery and good header.
“We will look at what we could have done better and try and improve but we have to give them credit as well.
“We want to win games and we are disappointed we have not won today.
“We will aim to get back to winning habits on Saturday.”
The match came 72 hours after Brentford had sealed promotion from Sky Bet League One.
“It was fantastic,” said David.
“It was a great achievement to reach the goal of getting promoted.
“It is great for everyone at the Club, supporters, staff and players.
“It was great to get there.
“It is a fantastic achievement and the players deserve it.”
David said he had loved being involved in Brentford’s promotion.
He joined The Bees when Mark Warburton became Brentford Manager in December, a few months after losing his job as Sheffield United boss.
David said he hoped Brentford could carry on being successful.
“I lost my job earlier this season,” he said.
“I was disappointed with that.
“I am thankful to Mark for giving me the opportunity to come and work here and I have enjoyed every minute.
“I have enjoyed working with the players and staff.
“Everyone from Matthew Benham down is really nice and great to work with.
“It is great to be involved in it.
“I have loved every minute of it.
“Being successful helps and I hope we can carry on being successful.”
