David Button said Brentford’s players were delighted with the way they came from behind to draw with Birmingham City with ten men.
The Bees were a goal down and a man down inside the first 15 minutes when Tony Craig was shown a red card by referee Richard Madley for denying Clayton Donaldson a goal scoring opportunity and Paul Caddis converted the spot kick.
After a tough first half The Bees fought back to dominate after the break and got a goal inside the last 15 minutes through Moses Odubajo.
David, speaking to Bees Player after the match, admitted there was a feeling that Brentford could have won the game but he hailed the way they responded to the early set back and a “magnificent” second half display.
“We are delighted in the circumstances but there is a little feeling that we could have nicked it,” said the goalkeeper.
“That shouldn’t take away from what we did.
“It was a great effort from the lads and to get a draw in those circumstances was a great result.
“We have to make sure we are tidy and don’t give the opposition anything.
“The margins are fine and we can’t allow a team to get ahead.
“We are learning game by game and getting better.
“I thought on the whole our response was good.
“We resorted to playing the way they wanted – long ball and a bit of a fight – for some of the first half but once we got the ball down we were magnificent.
“If we play like that we will be a match for anyone.”
David kept The Bees in touch with his first half display.
He made one superb save high to his right from a curling David Cotterill effort and then a point blank stop from the resulting corner, denying Lee Novak.
“It is nice to make the saves,” said David.
“That is what I am there for.
“For it to mean something it is a little sweeter.
“I work every day and everything is geared to match situations.
“We work on reactions and thankfully I was able to get a hand on one.
“When you make good saves and lose it is forgotten.
“To get a point and be unlucky not to win makes it a bit better.”
David said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton told his players at half time to stick to their philosophy.
“The manager told us not to get sucked in to the way they wanted to play,” he said.
“We will out-football a lot of teams with the technical ability we have.
“We need to stick to our game plan and play our football.
“We want to stick to our philosophy.
“The manager installed it into us that a goal was there.
“It wasn’t easy, there are tired legs now but the belief is there.
“If we take that in to each game we will be OK.”
Brentford’s goal came when Birmingham left back failed to control a high ball; Odubajo nipped in, raced clear and lifted the ball in.
It came after Odubajo, normally a winger, had been brought on at right back as Brentford threw bodies forward.
David said it was great to play in a team with that mentality.
“We have done well to capitalise on the mistake,” he said.
“We have to make sure we cut out the mistakes and capitalise when the opposition do.
“The subs were all fantastic.
“It is great to play in a team like this.
“It is something the lads want to be involved in and the fans want to see.
“We have to make sure the back four is not reckless.
“When we get a chance to go forward we do it and do it well.”
David also praised the Brentford fans.
“The fans got behind us today, as they do for most games,” he said.
“It was a massive help.
“Griffin Park was a fortress last year and we need the fans to do the same this year.”
