David Button said Brentford’s defeat at Stevenage last month has been a turning point in their season.
The Bees were beaten 2-1 in Hertfordshire last month after taking the lead.
Since then they have won six games in a row in all competitions and have climbed to fourth in Sky Bet League One.
David said he blamed himself for the Stevenage defeat – he was robbed of possession giving Stevenage a goal minutes after Brentford had taken the lead – but said it showed mental strength to have come back.
There was a meeting between Manager Uwe Rösler, the players and coaching staff after the match and David said that had helped.
He admitted not much had changed since the defeat but the return of Jonathan Douglas from injury and signing of Kadeem Harris on loan from Cardiff City had helped The Bees.
He said there was now a lot of confidence in the group but all the players knew they had to work hard to maintain their form.
“There is a buzz around the place,” said the goalkeeper, speaking to Bees Player this week.
“Everyone is more optimistic about what the season holds for us.
“It is lovely to be winning but we are under no illusions that we have to keep the hard work up to maintain the momentum.
“I was gutted after Stevenage.
“I blamed myself for the result.
“You have to take it on the chin and to win six on the bounce since then I think it shows mental strength from me and the lads.
“It was a turning point for us and at the meeting after the game the lads got a few things off their chest.
“Since then it has been great.
“It wasn’t a nice experience but we can look back on it as a turning point.
“The team has taken the positives from that.
“I don’t think much has changed but we get the first goal now and that gives us confidence.
“As the Manager has said, Dougie has come back in to the team, he gives us great experience in the middle of midfield and it has sured us up.
“Kadeem has made a real impact.
“Everyone else has raised their game.
“There is more confidence.”
Brentford’s sixth win on the bounce, and fifth in League One, was a 5-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
It was also their fourth clean sheet in a row.
David said Brentford’s display against Crewe was “fantastic” and praised his team mates for the way they help him keep the ball out of the net.
“It was a fantastic performance,” he said.
“We spoke before the game about there being no easy games.
“Credit to the lads for playing as well as they did.
“Those games can be harder as a goalkeeper because you don’t have anything to do for long periods; it tests different aspects of your game.
“It was nice to come away with a clean sheet.
“A big part of goalkeeping is clean sheets.
“It is nice to have four in a row.
“When you are keeping them consistently it is down to the whole team.
“We press from the front and work hard.
“It is also down to the Manager telling us what he wants and it is working well for us.”
David has not generally been overworked since joining The Bees from Charlton Athletic in the summer.
He said there are other aspects of his game that become important when playing for Brentford.
“I haven’t been pulling off saves left, right and centre but I have had other aspects tested,” he said.
“The Manager wants us to play out from the back and I have to do that.
“It also tests my concentration and being alert for the one save to make.
“I am enjoying it and am not complaining that I haven’t had much to do.”
Brentford’s next match is against current League One leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
David said the players would go to Molineux in a positive frame of mind and admitted the game had an extra edge due to both teams being in the top four.
“We will go there in a positive frame of mind and look to win,” he said.
“We feel we are one of the best teams in the league and they should be looking at playing Brentford as a big game.
“I am looking forward to it.
“Molineux is a lovely stadium, it will be a big crowd and hopefully we will have a few fans there too.
“There is a little bit of extra edge as we know both teams will be up there at the end of the season.”
