Courtney Senior felt Brentford would have won their Under-18 Professional Development League Two South game against Bristol City if they could have played on for another five minutes.
City took the lead after four minutes when Matt Mattis swept home from close range after good work on the left by Joe Morrell.
Brentford dominated the remainder of the game but only got the equaliser that they deserved with ten minutes remaining.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Courtney Senior, who played a hand in setting up Marsh-Brown’s equaliser, felt it was a good performance by The Bees even if they only left with a point.
Courtney thought that one the players got together and worked out how to deal with Bristol’s long-ball game at half-time The Bees were by far the better side.
“The boys think that was a point gained,” said Courtney.
“The performance of the lads was very good today even though we only got the one point.
“We dominated the second-half with counter-attack after counter-attack but we couldn’t score.
“Then I did a bit of magic and Kyjuon Marsh-Brown scored the goal.
“The morale went up and we just kept pushing but we just couldn’t find the goal.
“I think if we played another five minutes we would have scored another.
“At half-time we had a chat about dropping deeper to come forward instead of letting it go over our heads and defend from there.
“We communicated with each other and dealt with it really well.
“The first five minutes I thought they were on top because they kept turning us but after that I think we dominated the game.
“We figured out what we needed to do on the pitch but we didn’t really communicate it as a team together.
“At half-time we all came in as a huddle and had a chat to decide what we needed to do to stop it going over the top.
“It is good that the coaches help us to communicate with each other well.
“We do things outside of football to get us going which is good.”
The draw means it is now just one defeat in eight games for The Bees and as they head the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South by three points after 11 games.
The Bees have only lost twice all season and Courtney believes that the recent run of results has had a great effect on the team’s morale.
After two tough years results wise Courtney thinks there is a great attitude in the dressing room and that is helping to drive a winning mentality.
“The morale of the Youth Team is really good at the moment,” said Courtney.
“Everyone’s attitude is really good and we just go out thinking that we are going to win any game.
“I think the confidence in the group is much better than last season because we didn’t win too many games last season.
“We played ok and dominated a lot of games last year but we weren’t scoring and creating as many chances as we are this year.
“This year we have stepped up and everyone’s attitude is on it and they want to do well.
“That is really good and positive.
“There is a real winning mentality in the team this season because we are top of the table, playing well, scoring goals and winning games which is good.”
Courtney has made seven appearances for the Youth Team so far this season and came off the bench for the Under-21s last week in their defeat away at Crystal Palace.
The 17-year-old winger, who had a foot injury, disrupt his start to the season just wants to get as much game time as he can under his belt in both the Under-18s and Under-21s.
Courtney thinks that it is a good motivation for the rest of the dressing room to see Under-18 players playing up in the Under-21s and he hopes he can get more Under-21 call-ups in the coming weeks.
“I have been in the Under-21s at the start of the season and I am just looking to get as many 90 minutes under my belt as possible,” said Courtney.
“90 minutes for the Youth Team is good and I got on the bench and got 15 minutes for the Under-21s last week so it is really good at the moment.
“The Under-21s is a lot harder but it is really good for Development.
“If I push on it will be very good for the coming months.
“Everybody in the dressing room looks up to the boys who have played Under-21s football as it is a good motivation for them to step up as well.
“That step from Under-18s football to first-team football is a huge step.
“It is a really good opportunity for Montell Moore and for the other boys coming through.”
