Will Grigg said the work of Toumani Diagouraga made his winning goal for Brentford against Notts County yesterday “a simple job”.
The striker scored the only goal as Brentford made it eight wins in nine games with victory at Meadow Lane.
It was his second goal in four days after scoring the second in a 3-2 win over Peterborough United on Tuesday night.
There was dispute over that goal as George Saville headed against the post and it was not initially known that Will got the final touch.
But there was no doubt the goal at Notts County was his.
Toumani Diagouraga robbed Andrew Boucaud and sent a ball through, Will slotted under Bartosz Bialkowski and in to the net.
“We had a bit of a laugh and a joke in training after Tuesday,” said Will, talking to Bees Player about the Peterborough goal.
“But I think it was my goal and I was pleased to get it.
“There was no doubt about the one today.
“Toums did really well.
“He picked up the second ball and put a good weighted ball through.
“I had a simple job of passing it in.
“You have to compose yourself when you’re in that position.
“It got stuck under my feet a bit.
“You have to try and hit the target.
“I saw the goalkeeper spread himself and managed to sneak it under him.”
Brentford’s goal arguably came against the run of play.
County probably had the upper hand, after and end-to-end start, and could have been ahead at the break.
Will said Brentford defended well in a scrappy game and had the better of the second half.
He also praised the defensive work of his team mates.
“Notts County started the game well,” said the striker.
“We were on the back foot for a lot of the first half.
“We weren’t as sharp as in previous games.
“But it could have been four or five in the second half, we had good chances.
“This isn’t an easy place to come.
“It wasn’t pretty, it was scrappy at times but I thought we did well.
“We defended well when we needed to and had some good chances.”
Brentford have now kept six clean sheets in seven games and Will said that was a team effort.
The closest County came was when Gary Liddle volleyed a half cleared corner towards goal but Clayton Donaldson cleared it off the line.
Will said the result was all that mattered for The Bees and it was a “massive” three points.
He added there was belief in the camp they would score in every match and as they were defending well, one goal would often be enough.
“It is not just the back four, we defend all through the team,” he said.
“A good example was Clayton from the corner; he put his body on the line.
“We defend as a team and press high up.
“This is a massive result.
“Three points is the main thing.
“We have to keep doing it.
“Teams play well against us but don’t have a cutting edge.
“That is what we have.
“Every game we feel we will score.
“When you keep clean sheets and defend as we are, we feel we will win.
“We know that if we create chances we will score goals.
“It was one today but could have been four or five.
“We are feeling confident and I think that shows.”
Brentford made it seven points in seven days as they followed up a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a win against Peterborough United with the victory at Meadow Lane.
A run of eight wins in nine followed three straight defeats and The Bees are up to fourth in League One.
After an FA Cup with Budweiser tie against Carlisle United next week, Brentford start their Christmas run with a game against Oldham Athletic on December 14.
In the three weeks that follow they have five more league games scheduled and Will said it was a time to collect points.
“We have to be happy with seven points from the week,” he said.
“We had two tough games but this was always going to be tricky.
“They played some good stuff but we did our job and got the points.
“The lads have reacted well after our run of not winning.
“There is a lot of work behind the scenes and the staff deserve a lot of credit.
“We have to maintain that.
“Christmas is a period to pick up points.
“We will be looking forward to it and try to push on and work our way in to the top two.
“It is nice to go in to it full of confidence.
