Clayton Donaldson said he was “over the moon” after scoring twice in Brentford’s win over Crawley Town.
The striker scored in the first half and then hit the winner to give The Bees a 2-1 win.
Clayton said he was “on top of the world” after winning the match for The Bees and said it was a three points his team deserved.
“I’m over the moon,” said Clayton, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“It’s one thing winning, it’s another to get the winning goal.
“To cap it off with a couple of goals, I’m feeling on top of the world.
“I think we deserved it.
“We were on top from the get go and could have been three or four up in the first 15 minutes.
“You don’t always get what you deserve in football, we did today.
“We sent a message from the start that we would give them nothing.
“We were coming to try and win the game; we wanted to put them under pressure.
“We wanted to be on the front foot, get in their faces and create chances from the start.
“We did that.
“It’s good to see it pay off.
“We’ve done that a few times without getting the results.
“We did today.”
Clayton said there was a lot of belief in the team to recover after conceding an equaliser.
The Bees dominated the first half and could have been out of sight but Crawley capitalised on a Shaleum Logan error to level.
“We went 1-0 up and I had a few more chances,” he said.
“It was good to get one but we could have had three or four.
“We conceded from a mistake we made, which hurt us, but we kept going and we knew there was another goal.
“I was happy to take it well.
“We knew we had time after they equalised and we carried on doing what we had been.
“We have the belief, the manager kept us going.
“The belief was terrific today.”
Clayton could have had a hat-trick against the Sussex side – he had one disallowed in the first half that he felt should not have been ruled out.
His first came when Harry Forrester set him clear and he slipped the ball home and he beat two men to a Paul Hayes through ball to score the second.
“I thought I was onside when my goal was disallowed,” said Clayton.
“Paul Hayes was coming out and I was going in, I think the linesman was confused.
“When I scored I looked round and the flag was down, next minute it was up.
“I was coming from a deeper position and could see across the line.
“It was disappointing but I knew there were goals for me.
“Harry found me for the first and I broke the line.
“I have been in similar positions this season and been flagged offside.
“The flag stayed down and I had my chance.
“For the second, the defender and the keeper were heading towards the ball but I knew I would get there first.
“It was instinct to lob the keeper; luckily I got it on target.
“It’s very pleasing.”
Clayton had gone six games without a goal before the match but said he was not worried.
He added six goals in 11 npower League One games was a decent tally.
“Games without goals don’t worry me,” he said.
“Everyone that knows me knows I will score in four or five games, then not for a few and then get two like I did today.
“I have been getting chances, creating some and missing a few.
“I was not worrying as I have been getting chances.
“Six in 11 now is not a bad return.
“I will always get chances, I don’t worry too much, I know there will be games where my luck will turn.”
