Clayton Donaldson said Brentford got rewards for their work rate against Crewe Alexandra.
The Bees beat the Cheshire side 5-0 in a Sky Bet League One match yesterday afternoon.
Marcello Trotta opened the scoring before half time and Brentford produced a scintillating second half display.
Adam Forshaw scored 40 seconds after the restart and George Saville made it three.
Clayton then grabbed a brace to seal the win.
Clayton, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Crewe didn’t have a sniff and Brentford overran them.
“As a team that was second to none,” said the striker.
“We didn’t give them a sniff all game.
“Our work rate paid off and we got our rewards.
“It was there to be seen.
“We stuck at the game plan, we were on the front foot from the off.
“There are still tensions but once we got the third goal their heads dropped and we were able to play more football.
“Their heads went down and we overran them.”
Clayton said Adam Forshaw’s goal made a big difference and that was a factor in Brentford playing better after half time than before.
“We had a good start to the second half,” he said.
“That early goal made a big difference.
“We came out of the traps quickly and that knocked the wind out of their system.
“Just before or just after half time, goals kill the opposition.
“Getting a goal before half time would have changed their game plan.
“They would have had a chat and made a game plan and we scored straight after.
“That throws it out of the window.”
Clayton’s first goal came when he got in behind a dithering defence on to a Jonathan Douglas pass, rounded goalkeeper Alan Martin and scored.
It came soon after he had reacted quickest when a shot hit a post but blasted over from eight yards.
He scored a second when he latched on to a Farid El Alagui pass and shot low past Martin.
“I played the ball inside,” said Clayton, describing his first goal.
“Dougie has seen me make the run.
“It was a good ball over the top, I kept going, they were waiting for the offside flag, I stayed onside and the ball fell to me.
“It was a good ball, I knocked it round him and it went in.
“After the first chance it couldn’t have gone any better.
“It was a poor effort.
“I anticipated the shot, like I always do, it came off the post and it fell to me.
“It was on my left foot and I decided to swing at it rather than be more relaxed.
“I snatched at it.
“I always try to put things right, which I did.
“For the second I saw Farid with the ball, he saw me make the run, it was a good ball.
“I hit it first time, it was instinctive.
“I hit it early and I don’t think the keeper had time to adjust.
“The ball made the goal; I could get a shot off first time.”
Clayton now has nine for the season and is ahead of his tally at this stage last term, when he ended with 24 goals in all competitions.
He said he could have scored more last term and felt he was hitting the target more this season.
He said playing on the right side of a front three allowed him to occasionally go under the radar.
“I am keeping my head down and trying to get in the box as much as possible,” he said.
“It has paid off.
“We have good players that can put good balls through and in to the box.
“Luckily I have put them away.
“I didn’t score as many as I could have last year.
“This year it is going well.
“I can ghost in to the box from the wing; I can go under the radar.
“I am hitting the target and gambling.”
Brentford have now won six on the bounce and Clayton said it was an important time to go on a good run.
The wins have come after a defeat at Stevenage and a 90-minute meeting between players and management that followed.
Clayton said morale had improved after a “truthful” discussion and it had shown.
“This time of year you want to get on a good run going in to Christmas,” he said.
“Games come thick and fast.
“Positions are changing in the league.
“You want to consistently get points on the board.
“Hopefully we can keep this going.
“Everything was addressed after Stevenage.
“It was a good time for a meeting, everyone gave their thoughts.
“Everyone was truthful, the players took things on board, the gaffer took things on board.
“Morale came up and it has shown on the pitch.”
Clayton said he saw Brentford’s next two games, in a four day spell, as a “game changer”.
The Bees travel to Sky Bet League One leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers and then host Peterborough United, who are third.
The Bees are nine points behind Wolves in fourth.
“We play two teams above us and we want to get points off teams that are above us,” said Clayton.
“Both those teams have had a good start.
“When the fixtures came out we looked at that week as a game changer.
“I think it will be.
“If we get points off those teams we will be in a good position.”
