Clayton Donaldson said the football Brentford played in their Sky Bet League One win against Crewe Alexandra was “amazing”.
The Bees won 3-1 in Cheshire on Saturday afternoon in conditions that were not the best.
Alan Judge scored twice, lashing in from 20 yards early on and then from 25 in the second half.
Adam Forshaw made it three with a 35-yard strike and although Crewe pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, Brentford were comfortable winners.
Clayton, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the win, said Brentford knew it would be a football match rather than a battle against Crewe.
He said Brentford played the better football on the day and made it four wins in 18 months against Crewe, adding a 3-1 win to 5-1, 2-0 and 5-0 victories.
“We came here, warmed up and the wind and rain was terrible,” said the striker.
“We started the game brilliantly.
“We took hold of it from the start and in the first half they couldn’t get near us.
“They sat back and let us have the ball and pass it how we wanted.
“We have played them a few times and given them a tonking.
“They tried to hit us on the counter-attack but our football was amazing.
“Crewe want to play in the right way, that will never change.
“It was a football day today and we were able to show how we can play.
“We played better today.”
Clayton said his job was to stay wide and allow the central midfield players – Adam Forshaw, Jonathan Douglas and George Saville – to play.
Alan Judge started on the left of the front three and Clayton, who was on the right, said the Irishman brought something to the team.
“I was told to stay wide,” said Clayton.
“The midfield lads have more space if I am wide.
“I don’t want to block up the space.
“They were able create.
“It worked well and I tried to get on the end of a few crosses.
“When Alan Judge gets on the ball anything can happen.
“He brings something different to the team.
“He scored with two magnificent strikes today.
“A goal is a goal but goals like the three today are something to remember.”
Clayton is on 49 goals for Brentford and 99 in English professional football.
The game at Crewe was his fourth without a goal and Clayton said he tried everything to reach the landmark on Saturday.
He said he was not worried if he scored as long as Brentford won and was pleased he was getting chances.
“I have been on 49 and 99 for a while now,” said Clayton.
“I tried everything today.
“The sooner I get off it the better.
“As long as the team is winning I am happy.
“Three points is the most important thing.
“I am disappointed today and we have won 3-1.
“If you don’t create chances something is wrong.
“If I get chances I can go away knowing there are opportunities there.
“Getting a goal is a bonus, points get you promoted.”
Brentford remained top of Sky Bet League One with the win.
They are two points ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are second.
Clayton said no-one was looking too far ahead but a win against Wolves, who come to Griffin Park on Saturday, would be a boost mentally.
“The staff keep us on our toes and not look too far ahead.
“Wolves is the next game, we won’t loom further than that.
“If we can get three points on Saturday it would be a great achievement.
“But it is just another game.
“It would be good mentally and would send out a message.
“We have a good squad and hopefully that will take us all the way.
