Jake Bidwell said the Brentford players were delighted with their haul of points over the Christmas period.
The Bees made it four wins in 11 days by beating Peterborough United at London Road yesterday, New Year’s Day, Wednesday January 1, and five in five since Mark Warburton took over as Brentford Manager.
Jake, speaking to Bees Player after the 3-1 win, said the players had been set a target for the previous five games and had surpassed it.
He said they would now go away for a short break before their next game against Port Vale on January 11 and look to beat the next target.
“Everyone is delighted,” said Jake.
“Whatever league you play in, whoever you play for, Christmas is a tough time of year.
“We have come out of it with 15 points out of 15.
“It couldn’t have gone any better.
“The new gaffer came in and set a short term target for those five games.
“It is safe to say we reached that target.
“Now we can go away for a couple of days, recharge the batteries and look at whatever target comes next.
“We’ll try and exceed that one as well.”
In a match played in a strong wind, intermittent rain and on a pitch that was cut up at the start and got worse, Brentford went ahead just past the quarter hour mark through an Adam Forshaw penalty.
Peterborough equalised when Jack Payne scored but Sam Saunders put Brentford back in front.
Clayton Donaldson sealed the win late on after a second Adam Forshaw penalty had been saved earlier in the half.
Jake said conditions played a part – particularly for Peterborough’s goal, a long-range strike that was taken in by the wind – but Brentford dealt with them.
“Peterborough are one of the favourites to go up,” said the left back.
“We have come here, to their patch and beat them.
”It was tough at times, we couldn’t get the ball down and play as much as we would have liked with the pitch and the conditions.
“But we got our noses in front and kept our noses in front.
“We can’t ask for more.
“Wind is the worst conditions to play in.
“I think it showed with their goal.
“It was going a couple of feet over the bar and dipped late out of nowhere.
“We adjusted to it well and dealt with everything they threw at us.”
Brentford scored their second goal moments after Peterborough had levelled and Jake said that showed the character of the squad, as had coming from behind to beat their hosts in the return game in November and Swindon Town on Boxing Day.
“Scoring so soon after their goal epitomises what we are about,” he said.
“We have fallen behind recently, to Swindon on Boxing Day and Peterborough before that.
“You can see the character of the squad.
“It would have been nice to get a two goal cushion early in the second half but we dealt with it.
“Thankfully we got the third goal in the end.
“It is up to us to recharge the batteries and then get back on it when we are back in.”
Jake said Peterborough were desperate for a win but Brentford’s defence kept them out.
He said The Bees could deal with anything a team could throw at them, long ball, intricate passing or pace in behind.
“They are under pressure, they lost two in a row before this and were desperate for a win,” said.
“They couldn’t break us down.
“We got the three points and everyone is delighted.
“Anyway that a team wants to come at us, we can deal with it, that shows the quality in the squad.
“We are up for any way a team wants to come at us and we can come out on top.”
Jake also praised the travelling Brentford supporters.
“The fans have been outstanding, not just through the Christmas period, for the whole season,” he said.
“I can’t give enough credit to them.
“I hope they continue to turn out in numbers, I am sure they will do.”
Brentford do not play again until January 11.
They are not in FA Cup with Budweiser action this weekend, when the competition reaches the Third Round stage, while Sheffield United, their scheduled League One opponents, are, so the game is postponed.
Jake said the break may be a blessing and added The Bees, three points clear at the top of League One, would have to continue to improve if they were to win promotion
“Our target was to be top two,” he said.
“As we are top, we are there to be shot at.
“We have to up our game again in to the New Year.
“It is disappointing to go out of the FA Cup but it could be a blessing in disguise.
“Last year we played seven or eight extra games and at the end they added up.
“Everyone will be thankful for a couple of days off.
“We have to use this time wisely.”
