Andre Gray said there was a mixture of frustration and happiness after scoring Brentford’s equalising goal against Derby County yesterday.
The Bees came from behind to beat the team that started the day top of the Sky Bet Championship at Griffin Park.
They trailed at the break but Andre levelled it up with a first time finish, slotting home from 20 yards after Moses Odubajo had burst forward and then squared the ball.
Brentford went on to win the game with Stuart Dallas scoring a stoppage time winner.
It was Andre’s first goal for almost two months and he had gone eight games without hitting the target.
The striker described the run of games without a goal as a “drought” but said he had sat down with Brentford Manager Mark Warburton this week.
He said after the conversation he realised how well he had done since stepping up from non-league football in the summer and he was trying not to put so much pressure on himself.
Andre added to get the goal against Derby would give him an additional boost.
“I had to sit down and think,” said the striker, speaking to Bees Player after the win.
“I had a good meeting with the gaffer.
“He told me how well I was doing and how far I have come.
“I have come up three leagues and it is a massive step.
“I put pressure on myself because I know I can score goals and I know I can score the chances I have had but I haven’t been.
“I have tried not to put too much pressure on.
“I am trying not to stress about it.
“The gaffer has great belief in me.
“It was a matter of time until I scored and a big confidence boost that it came against the top that were top of the league.
“I didn’t know how to react when I scored.
“It was frustration and happiness all at once.
“I was frustrated that it had taken me so long to score and happy to get us back in the game.
“I needed a chance where I didn’t have time to think.
“I have been going through a drought.
“I have been getting chances but I have had time to think.
“Today I just had to get something on it.
“Maybe in other games I would have taken a touch.
“The lads have been telling me to shoot, I did and it went in.”
Andre said there was nothing better than scoring a last minute goal to win a game.
There were just seconds remaining when Dallas lashed in and Andre, who had been substituted, said everyone went crazy when it hit the back of the net.
“Everyone is buzzing,” said the striker.
“When you score in the last minute to win a game it is a great feeling.
“It feels like we won a cup final.
“There is nothing better than scoring in the last minute to win a game.
“Everyone went crazy on the bench.
“To do it against the team that were top of the league is even better.”
Derby had the better of the first half and went ahead through Chris Martin.
Brentford improved towards the end of the half and Andre said a half time talk helped The Bees build in the second period.
“It was a typical first half performance by a top-of-the-league team,” he said.
“It was always going to be difficult.
“We had a game plan and that worked to a certain extent but we had to get hold of the ball and do what we do best.
“We needed to get to grips with the game.
“Maybe we needed half time to regroup and get back to what we do.”
Andre said he wound himself up at half time and set out to be more aggressive after the break.
“The gaffer has always said that Plan B is to do Plan A better,” he said.
“I needed to be more aggressive and get hold of the ball a bit more.
“I got wound up and it brought the team in to play a bit more.
“I am still learning.
“There were times in the first half when I was trying to pin experienced centre halves and it is not as easy as that.
“In the second half I got to grips with it, played two touch and became effective.
“I am still learning and it will take time.”
Brentford have two away fixtures to come this week, at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday and Millwall on Saturday.
Andre said The Bees would go to Forest looking to make it back-to-back wins.
“We go to another top team on Wednesday and it will be difficult,” he said.
“I am sure we have a game plan and we have the quality to beat these teams, you saw that today.
“We will go there to win.
“We don’t expect to get a point we expect to get three.
“We have a great attitude and if we look for a draw we will lose.
“We go to win every game, no matter who we play.”
